ABOUT THIS STORY

An exhibition dates Huda’s toy far earlier than its factory stamp. She must decide which parts of its family story a label can support.

Huda lent a small wooden cart to a commercial heritage exhibition so the organiser could present its story. Her grandfather used to say he had owned it before her father was born. Her own memory began with a rope she pulled it by and a wheel that caught on the carpet. At the handover she read a label calling it a “historic treasure” and dating it to 1910. Huda had not given that date.

She turned the cart over to show the organiser a crack that should not be widened, revealing a factory stamp underneath and the words “Year of production: 1986.” He said the stamp might refer to a later repair. Huda opened the box and took out the instruction manual. They found the same drawing and factory name, with no mention of a repair. Huda could no longer leave 1910 in gold lettering.

The organiser said visitors came to hear a story, not to read a stamp. She replied that she wanted her story too, but did not know whether her grandfather had meant another cart. She lifted the rope, revealing a knot she had tightened as a child. The stamp did not make the knot false, and the knot did not date the wood. She had to distinguish what she remembered, what she had heard, and what the exhibited object said.

She proposed a label describing the family’s use and citing her grandfather’s account as an account, alongside the stamp’s date. The organiser objected to its length, so she shortened the colour description and kept the sources. He asked whether the “treasure” heading should change. She said it was his heading and her objection concerned the year. Then she asked him to read the text aloud to her before sending it to print.

At the opening Huda stood near the cart and heard a visitor recall a similar wheel. She did not ask about its date. She asked whether it had caught, and the visitor laughed. The label gave the stamp’s date and left her grandfather’s story attributed to its teller. The manual remained in the box. When the organiser pulled the rope to adjust the cart’s position, she asked him to lift it: the knot still held its place.

What to remember

  • A trace of childhood use and a production stamp answer different questions about the same object.
  • A label can retain a family account by identifying its speaker instead of converting it into a certified date.
