A blue row in a donated basket brings back a grandmother’s hands. A receipt seems to answer the label, until purchase, manufacture and memory come apart.

I stood before the basket my mother had donated to the museum and read: “Village workshop; maker unknown.” A short blue row reminded me of my grandmother’s hands as she wove in our city home. I felt that “unknown” erased her. I was insisting on a name, as though my memory carried a stamp sufficient to change the label. I photographed it and went home to search for the papers.
I found a receipt for the basket naming a market in the city and carried it as though it were an answer. But my uncle said my grandmother had bought the basket from a trader and used to weave other baskets in the same pattern. He did not deny what I had seen; he placed a distance between those hands and this basket that I had not been allowing. When I asked for the source of his account, he said he remembered a conversation with her, not the day of purchase.
At the museum, the curator opened the donation register. The workshop description was written in my mother’s hand, while the maker’s name had been left blank. I said I had seen my grandmother weaving. She replied that she accepted that, then asked whether I remembered the making of this particular basket. The receipt was not enough for that; it established the place of purchase, not the place of manufacture. I slowly read the market’s name again.
She offered to preserve my testimony under my name with the file, without putting it in place of the label. It bothered me that my sentence would need a speaker, while the workshop description seemed to speak of its own accord. She showed me the source field in the register, which the visitor could not see. I asked for the description’s source to be mentioned too; she said she would submit the request for review, without promising an immediate change.
I wrote: “I remember my grandmother weaving this pattern in the city,” and stopped before writing “this basket.” I signed and left a copy of the receipt, then returned to the glass. The blue row remained shorter than its neighbour, and the label remained as it was. I had not corrected it that day, and I could no longer read it without imagining the empty field and the handwriting preserved behind it.
