I put the recorder on my grandmother’s table and said I wanted an interview for the family archive. She agreed and asked whether the device would preserve the spoon’s sound too. I had arranged my questions: leaving the village, work, buying the house. I was imagining an ending that would gather them into a single journey. I pressed the test button and asked her to say something; she asked about the tea that had grown cold between us.
She related that the first thing she had bought in the city was a teapot lid, because the old lid had fallen off on the road. Then she laughed at herself: perhaps the teapot belonged to her neighbour, and perhaps she had bought the lid a month later. Her voice was light, and I could hear the spoon striking the cup. I wanted to keep the laugh, but stopped the test to begin what I called the real recording.
I asked about the day on which her new life had begun. “Which day?” she said, mentioning her arrival, then a return for two weeks, then the start of a job she had quickly left. I brought her back to my question and suggested we end with buying the house, where everything had settled. She said the house had begun a series of instalment payments, not ended the questions. When I asked her to finish the story, she said, “Enough for now.”
I did not pressure her and switched off the device. I asked whether she permitted the material to be kept. She pointed to the test and said the conversation about the lid could stay, but the interview could not. She did not explain another reason to me, and I did not ask about a secret. On my sheet, the heading “Settling down” remained without a paragraph; I had supplied the heading, and the blank was not a sentence she had spoken.
I deleted the interview file in front of her and named the test with her name and its date. She took out an orange and asked me to peel it; the knife was near the cup. As I lifted the peel, she said something about a neighbour, and we laughed. I did not restart the recorder or add her words to the sheet. The orange needed two hands, and the ending I had prepared stayed in my notebook alone.

What to remember
- The grandmother’s uncertain lid story and the grandson’s proposed ending organise memory in different ways.
- A refused interview leaves an unfilled plan; it does not itself disclose why the speaker stopped.
