01Read the Arabic story
تَتَبُّعُ شَائِعَةٍ إِلَى مَصْدَرِهَا
قَرَأَتْ مَرْيَمُ فِي مَجْمُوعَةِ الْحَيِّ أَنَّ الْمَكْتَبَةَ سَتُغْلَقُ نِهَائِيًّا فِي الْأُسْبُوعِ الْمُقْبِلِ. كَانَتِ الرِّسَالَةُ قَصِيرَةً، وَتَحْتَهَا تَعْلِيقَاتٌ غَاضِبَةٌ عَنْ ضَيَاعِ مَكَانِ الدِّرَاسَةِ الْوَحِيدِ فِي الْمِنْطَقَةِ. هَمَّتْ بِإِرْسَالِهَا إِلَى أُخْتِهَا، ثُمَّ لَاحَظَتْ أَنَّهَا لَا تَذْكُرُ اسْمَ مَسْؤُولٍ وَلَا تَحْمِلُ رَابِطًا لِإِعْلَانٍ. سَأَلَتْ مُرْسِلَهَا عَنْ مَصْدَرِ الْخَبَرِ بَدَلًا مِنْ إِعَادَةِ نَشْرِهِ.
قَالَ الْجَارُ إِنَّهُ نَقَلَ مَا وَصَلَهُ مِنْ صَدِيقٍ، وَأَرْسَلَ صُورَةَ الْمُحَادَثَةِ. فِي تِلْكَ النُّسْخَةِ، كَانَ الْإِغْلَاقُ مُؤَقَّتًا، لَكِنْ دُونَ مُدَّةٍ مُحَدَّدَةٍ. وَعِنْدَمَا سَأَلَتِ الصَّدِيقَ، وَجَدَتْ أَنَّهُ فَهِمَ كَلِمَةَ «مُؤَقَّتٍ» عَلَى أَنَّهَا تَعْبِيرٌ لِتَهْدِئَةِ النَّاسِ. كَانَ قَدْ شَاهَدَ مَبْنًى آخَرَ يُغْلَقُ لِلصِّيَانَةِ ثُمَّ لَا يُفْتَحُ، فَتَوَقَّعَ تَكْرَارَ التَّجْرِبَةِ.
دَلَّهَا الصَّدِيقُ عَلَى مُشْرِفِ الصِّيَانَةِ الَّذِي تَحَدَّثَ إِلَيْهِ صَبَاحًا. شَرَحَ الْمُشْرِفُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: «قَدْ نُغْلِقُ قَاعَةَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الْجَانِبِيَّةَ طَوَالَ فَتْرَةِ بَعْدِ الظُّهْرِ فِي يَوْمٍ وَاحِدٍ إِذَا احْتَاجَتْ أَعْمَالُ الْإِصْلَاحِ إِلَى ذَلِكَ». لَمْ يَكُنْ مَوْعِدُ الْعَمَلِ قَدْ تَحَدَّدَ بَعْدُ. أَمَّا الْمَكْتَبَةُ نَفْسُهَا فَسَتَبْقَى مَفْتُوحَةً، وَالْإِدَارَةُ سَتَنْشُرُ التَّفَاصِيلَ عِنْدَ تَأْكِيدِ الْمَوْعِدِ.
قَارَنَتْ مَرْيَمُ بَيْنَ النُّسَخِ: اخْتَفَتِ الْقَاعَةُ فَحَلَّتْ مَحَلَّهَا الْمَكْتَبَةُ، وَسَقَطَ الشَّرْطُ، ثُمَّ تَحَوَّلَ الِاحْتِمَالُ إِلَى قَرَارٍ نِهَائِيٍّ. كَتَبَتْ تَصْحِيحًا يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَ كَلَامِ الْمُشْرِفِ وَتَوَقُّعَاتِ مَنْ نَقَلُوهُ. اعْتَذَرَ الْجَارُ وَأَرَادَ حَذْفَ رِسَالَتِهِ، لَكِنَّهَا طَلَبَتْ مِنْهُ إِرْسَالَ التَّصْحِيحِ إِلَى الْمَجْمُوعَاتِ الَّتِي نَشَرَ فِيهَا الْخَبَرَ، لِأَنَّ الْحَذْفَ هُنَا لَنْ يُغَيِّرَ النُّسَخَ الْمَوْجُودَةَ هُنَاكَ.
فِي الْمَسَاءِ، أَضَافَتِ الْمَكْتَبَةُ إِعْلَانًا يُؤَكِّدُ اسْتِمْرَارَ خَدَمَاتِهَا. نَشَرَ الْجَارُ رَابِطَهُ تَحْتَ تَصْحِيحِهِ، وَطَلَبَ مِمَّنْ نَقَلَ الرِّسَالَةَ الْأُولَى أَنْ يُرْسِلَ الْجَدِيدَةَ أَيْضًا. بَعْدَ سَاعَةٍ، وَصَلَتْ إِلَى مَرْيَمَ النُّسْخَةُ الْقَدِيمَةُ مِنْ مَجْمُوعَةٍ أُخْرَى. لَمْ تَكْتُبْ أَنَّ مُرْسِلَهَا يَكْذِبُ، بَلْ أَرْسَلَتِ الرَّابِطَ وَسَأَلَتْهُ إِنْ كَانَ يَسْتَطِيعُ إِيصَالَهُ إِلَى مَنْ أَخْبَرَهُ.

Maryam read in the neighbourhood group that the library would close permanently the following week. The message was short, with angry comments underneath about losing the area’s only study space. She was about to forward it to her sister, then noticed that it named no official and included no announcement link. She asked its sender for the source instead of sharing it again.
The neighbour said he had passed on what he received from a friend and sent a screenshot of the conversation. In that version, the closure was temporary, but no duration was specified. When she asked the friend, she found that he had understood “temporary” as wording intended to reassure people. He had seen another building close for maintenance and never reopen, so he expected the experience to repeat itself.
The friend directed her to the maintenance supervisor he had spoken to that morning. The supervisor explained that he had said: “We may close the side reading room for one afternoon if the repairs require it.” The work had not yet been scheduled. The library itself would remain open, and the administration would publish the details once the date was confirmed.
Maryam compared the versions: the room had disappeared and been replaced by the library, the condition had been dropped, and a possibility had become a final decision. She wrote a correction separating the supervisor’s words from the expectations of those who repeated them. The neighbour apologised and wanted to delete his message, but she asked him to send the correction to the groups where he had shared the news, because deleting it here would not change the copies there.
That evening, the library posted an announcement confirming that its services would continue. The neighbour shared its link beneath his correction and asked anyone who had forwarded the first message to send the new one too. An hour later, Maryam received the old version from another group. She did not write that its sender was lying; she sent the link and asked whether he could pass it to whoever had told him.
