Editor Layla, sponsor Faris, writer Dima and independent adviser Samir review a fictional arts newsletter. A valid correction to the sponsor’s contribution accompanies a request to remove an unfavourable first-hand account of an exhibition queue.

فَارِسٌ: أُفَضِّلُ أَنْ يَسْبِقَ رَدِّي الْمَقَالَ، لِئَلَّا يَصِلَ الْقَارِئُ إِلَى التَّقْيِيمِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَعْرِفَ مَوْقِفِي. وَأَنَا لَا أَتَّهِمُ دِيمَا بِاخْتِلَاقِ الْوَقْتِ؛ أَخْتَلِفُ مَعَهَا فِي مِقْدَارِ الْوَزْنِ الَّذِي أَعْطَتْهُ لِهَذِهِ التَّجْرِبَةِ.
دِيمَا: أَفْهَمُ هَذَا الْفَرْقَ، وَلَا أَطْلُبُ أَنْ تَقْبَلَ تَقْيِيمِي. لَكِنَّ تَقْدِيمَ رَدِّكَ عَلَى نَصِّي قَدْ يَجْعَلُ الْقَارِئَ يَرَاهُ كَأَنَّهُ تَنْبِيهٌ تَحْرِيرِيٌّ إِلَى خَطَأٍ فِيهِ. أُفَضِّلُ أَنْ يَقْرَأَ التَّجْرِبَةَ ثُمَّ اخْتِلَافَكَ مَعَهَا.
سَمِيرٌ: هَذَا اخْتِلَافٌ فِي تَرْتِيبِ الْعَرْضِ لَهُ أَثَرٌ فِي الْقِرَاءَةِ. لَا أَحْسِمُهُ نِيَابَةً عَنِ التَّحْرِيرِ، وَلَا أَعُدُّ طَلَبَ فَارِسٍ دَلِيلًا عَلَى خِدَاعٍ. نَسْتَطِيعُ فَحْصَ مَا تُوحِي بِهِ كُلُّ صِيغَةٍ دُونَ أَنْ نَنْسِبَ إِلَيْهِ قَصْدًا خَفِيًّا.
لَيْلَى: قَرَارِي لِهَذَا الْعَدَدِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ الرَّدُّ بَعْدَ الْمَقَالِ، بِعُنْوَانٍ يَنْسِبُهُ إِلَى الرَّاعِي. سَنُرَاجِعُ صِيَاغَتَهُ لِتَمْيِيزِ الرَّأْيِ مِنَ الْمَعْلُومَةِ، وَلَنْ أَمْنَحَهُ حَقَّ حَذْفِ الْمَقَالِ. أَقْبَلُ أَنْ يَبْقَى فَارِسٌ غَيْرَ رَاضٍ عَنِ التَّرْتِيبِ.

Layla — editor: We are reviewing our fictional arts newsletter before sending the issue. Our written agreement lets Faris check his name and the contribution attributed to him, leaving content decisions to the editors. He has now requested removal of Dima’s account of the queue at the exhibition he supported.
Faris — sponsor: I have a correction and an objection. The text says I funded the exhibition’s organisation; I actually supported printing forty copies of its guide. I also ask for the waiting paragraph to be removed: I fear my name beside it will look like endorsement.
Dima — writer: I will correct the contribution description; that is an error in my text. As for the queue, I stood in it from six until twenty past six, then entered. That was my experience, and I think it deserves description alongside the works I liked inside.
Samir — independent adviser: My role here is advisory; I do not decide publication. I think we should separate correcting the contribution from deleting the paragraph. The first request’s validity does not make the second part of it, nor establish that every interpretation in the text is supported.
Layla — editor: The draft says that the organisers did not care about visitors. Your waiting time describes what happened to you, but does not by itself show the organisers’ intentions. I want that sentence changed, not because it upset the sponsor.
Faris — sponsor: The programme before us gives six as the time for opening the doors. Does that not make discussing your wait misleading? A reader might take it to mean the exhibition began late, even though the written time is the same as your arrival time.
Dima — writer: I did not see the moment the doors opened, so I will not write that they opened late. I know my arrival and entry times. I accept removing the judgement about the organisers’ intentions while retaining this wait and its effect on me.
Samir — independent adviser: The programme establishes the announced time, not what happened to every visitor then. Dima’s account does not describe the queue throughout the evening. There is room for narrower wording that preserves the experience without making it a measure of everyone’s.
Layla — editor: We will state clearly that Dima waited twenty minutes at the start of her visit, without attributing that duration to everyone present. We will correct Faris’s support in the sponsorship field. These are two accuracy changes, not a bargain to remove criticism.
Faris — sponsor: I appreciate the correction, but my concern remains. I want an opportunity to explain that my contribution does not mean agreement with the writer’s assessment. Will my response appear beside the article, or will sponsorship remain the only indication of my position?
Dima — writer: I do not object to your response appearing, but I have reservations about its becoming a condition for accepting what I saw. You can disagree with my assessment of the wait without making my entry at twenty past six a report needing your approval.
Samir — independent adviser: We can present a response attributed to Faris, distinguished from the editorial voice. It does not become a factual correction merely because it disagrees with an assessment. If it adds new information, that too will need its source.
Layla — editor: I propose a short response after the article in which Faris states his disagreement with the assessment and the limits of his contribution. We will keep the sponsorship disclosure visible; I do not want to hide the relationship to make our disagreement seem less embarrassing.
Faris — sponsor: I would prefer my response before the article, so the reader does not reach the assessment before knowing my position. I am not accusing Dima of inventing the time; I disagree about the weight she gave this experience.
Dima — writer: I understand that distinction and do not ask you to accept my assessment. But placing your response before my text could make the reader see it as an editorial warning about an error in it. I prefer readers to encounter the experience and then your disagreement.
Samir — independent adviser: This is a disagreement about presentation order that affects reading. I do not resolve it on the editors’ behalf or treat Faris’s request as evidence of deceit. We can examine what each arrangement suggests without attributing a hidden intention to him.
Layla — editor: My decision for this issue is to place the response after the article, under a heading attributing it to the sponsor. We will review its wording to distinguish opinion from information, and will not grant him a right to remove the article. I accept that Faris may remain dissatisfied with the order.
Faris — sponsor: I accept sending a response within these limits, while retaining my preference for an earlier position. But I do not now promise renewed support for the next issue; I will review what I want from sponsorship. That is a future decision I have not yet made.
Dima — writer: I will send the revised draft today with the corrected support description and my limited experience. From my entry time I cannot infer the queue’s cause or what was happening after I left. That limits my account without denying how I felt.
Samir — independent adviser: The review should show why each sentence changed. Correcting the support follows from specifying the contribution; removing the intention judgement follows from the limited account. Deleting the whole paragraph was not a necessary consequence of either.
Layla — editor: I will record the reasons for changes in the editorial log. I will not say that our independence secured new support or that the sponsor’s hesitation means he has decided to stop support. The present decision is specific: check facts and retain the assessment attributed to its author.
Faris — sponsor: I will write my response without presenting the programme as evidence of every visitor’s entry time. I will state that I do not share Dima’s assessment of the first part of the visit. That remains a difference of opinion, not my approval of the text.
Dima — writer: I will not add that the sponsor tried to hide what happened. I know that he requested deletion and then accepted sending a response. I can describe his request and its present outcome without writing an intention for him that he did not state.
Samir — independent adviser: That preserves the difference between describing an attempt to influence and judging its motive. Even so, the editors need not establish bad intention to refuse a deletion right. The review limits in your agreement have been known from the beginning.
Layla — editor: The sponsorship disclosure and response attributed to Faris will remain visible in this issue’s design. We have not sent the newsletter, and the response has not arrived. We will check the final version against this decision before sending it, without describing the disagreement as ended.
Faris — sponsor: I will respond to the proposed wording describing my contribution and state my position in the response. I still prefer it nearer the article’s beginning. Accepting that I will send it does not make the order my choice or commit me to future sponsorship.
Dima — writer: I will await the final version to check that my opinion is attributed to me. I do not ask for everything I initially wrote to remain; I ask that changes be explained by what we know, not what pleases the funder. I accept review without making it permission to erase.
Samir — independent adviser: I will record this as a decision for this issue under your agreement, not a guarantee about every future relationship. The written response and future support remain open; the editor has not granted the sponsor a right to delete the article.
