Architect Lina, historian Hisham, craftsperson Mazin and resident Salma plan a decorative entrance display in fictional Sidr Courtyard. Surviving fragments, a monochrome photograph and a remembered blue sign support different kinds of claims.

Lina — architect: We have a decorative entrance in a fictional heritage courtyard we call Sidr Courtyard. I wrote a display heading saying that we restored the original entrance. But that phrase combines surviving materials with parts we are designing today.
Hisham — historian: Three pieces of the sign survive: they contain part of two letters and the tip of a decorative leaf. They attest only to those shapes. The old photograph shows the complete name but does not show every detail of the edges.
Mazin — craftsperson: I can draw the missing letters using the photograph, but their spacing will require judgement on my part. I do not want the visitor to understand precise workmanship as precise knowledge of what was lost.
Salma — resident: I remember the sign as blue, and I connect it with evenings I spent here with my mother. Leaving out the colour therefore feels to me like giving up something of the place, even if the surviving trace does not settle it.
Lina — architect: I do not want to remove your experience, but the current heading makes everything the visitor will see appear old. By authenticity, do we mean the age of the material, the design’s fidelity to evidence, or the courtyard’s continuing use?
Hisham — historian: The black-and-white photograph does not establish that the colour was blue. Salma’s account deserves to be mentioned under her name, rather than turned into a settled description of the sign. Here the source of knowledge and degree of certainty differ.
Mazin — craftsperson: I was thinking of painting the new sign blue because I want to connect the work with Salma’s memory. But I now see that the colour may tell the eye something the written label treats with reserve.
Salma — resident: I also want a new visitor to read the courtyard’s name without solving a puzzle. Recognising the place matters to me no less than seeing the old pieces, but the two purposes should not be confused.
Lina — architect: I propose a new light cream sign carrying the name legible in the photograph. We display the surviving pieces beside it and show in an explanatory drawing which lines are copied and which are completions of our own.
Hisham — historian: The name written in the photograph is clear, so we need not guess its words. Completing the decoration around it does not have the same degree of documentation. The drawing may be visually convincing and remain a possibility.
Mazin — craftsperson: Then I will use clear lettering for the new sign, without claiming it is the original maker’s lettering. But I have reservations about smoothing out every difference in the explanatory drawing: let the gap remain visible, rather than mentioned only in a footnote.
Salma — resident: I agree to showing the gap in the drawing, not to leaving the courtyard’s name incomplete on the sign. Nor am I asking you to manufacture new signs of age; I want the newness not to make the place unfamiliar to me.
Lina — architect: We can separate the two functions through the heading and explanation: a modern sign identifying the courtyard, and a drawing for interpreting the lost object. We will not call the whole a complete restoration; that description exceeds what we know.
Hisham — historian: We state that the three pieces are the surviving material and that the drawing uses a photograph. This does not diminish the new work’s value; it identifies the kind of value we attribute to it before visitors.
Mazin — craftsperson: I accept that and suggest dotted lines for the completed portions of the drawing. The visitor then need not remember the explanation at every detail, and the limits of our knowledge do not look like a flaw we concealed.
Salma — resident: But a dotted line may look unfinished to someone passing quickly. I prefer a complete image and then reading the details of its sources. We disagree about the presentation, not the visitor’s right to know the difference.
Lina — architect: We will use dotted lines in the drawing, with a short heading explaining them. The modern sign will retain the complete name. I think this protects the distinction we agreed on, although it is not Salma’s preferred choice.
Hisham — historian: I will write beside the photograph that our materials do not settle the colour of the old sign. I am not saying it was not blue: the absence of proof here does not give me an alternative colour.
Mazin — craftsperson: A question about my work remains: if I draw the same leaf tip on the modern sign, must I call it a copy? I will not use the old piece itself; I will borrow the shape we see on it.
Salma — resident: I prefer saying that the new sign draws inspiration from this surviving detail. That is a connection I can see, and it does not ask me to consider the new old. Blue remains part of my personal account.
Lina — architect: Yes, and we will date the modern sign with its production date. This addition does not erase the earlier history, but it prevents two periods being mixed in one description. The entrance will hold traces and a present reading of them together.
Hisham — historian: I will remove the word original from the label if it describes the new sign. Attributing the surviving pieces to the old sign will remain. The problem is not the word alone but the thing it describes.
Mazin — craftsperson: Then we are not asking the new material to disguise itself as old. I will prepare the drawing and sign mock-up with these distinctions. I regard their clarity as part of the quality of my work, even if it makes the image less complete.
Salma — resident: I still find the complete image more beautiful, but I accept trying this display. I will write my memory of the colour in the first person, not as what everyone must see when looking at the entrance.
Lina — architect: What we agreed today is a display plan; we have not installed the sign yet. We will review the mock-up before making it, so that the shapes do not say something the words deny. We will keep our aesthetic disagreement visible in the design file.
Hisham — historian: Salma’s memory will be a named source within the display, not an emotional ornament outside it. It does not settle the sign’s colour, but it shows why that colour matters to one resident. That is another meaning we preserve.
Mazin — craftsperson: I will leave space in the mock-up for that account beside the photograph. I do not want reserve about the colour to look like doubt about Salma’s sincerity; it concerns the kind of evidence we seek for describing the object.
Salma — resident: I will read the mock-up as a resident who knows the place, not as an authority on all its details. For now, it is enough that my memory finds a place without being tasked with proving what it cannot prove alone.

- Distinguish precise workmanship from certainty about a lost object.
- Follow a visual and verbal qualification without treating missing proof as disproof.
- Recognise an attributed memory’s value while separating a display plan from its execution.
