ABOUT THIS CONVERSATION

Multilingual writer Layth, sociolinguist Rima, student Umar and moderator Nadir examine a fictional writing club’s introductions and registration form. A welcome and a first-language question imply more than the speakers intended.

Layth — multilingual writer: When I read my text in our fictional club, Nadir welcomed me while saying that my accent was unfamiliar to him. I recognised his good intention, but connecting the welcome with that qualification made me appear an exceptional guest.

Rima — sociolinguist: Is the disagreement about your right to participate or about the description accompanying it? I am asking about this particular situation; I do not want to make one accent a ready explanation for every experience here.

Umar — student: At registration I ticked the statement that Arabic is my first language. Nadir then assumed I wanted to read my text aloud. I speak easily, but I hesitate when reading words in front of others.

Nadir — moderator: Yes, I combined two different things. I wrote the question to allocate reading roles, then used its answer as though it described your readiness. Club membership was not conditional on answering yes; we need to make that clear.

Layth — multilingual writer: The question itself does not accommodate my answer. I learned two languages at home from childhood, and now write in Arabic more than in the other. I do not want to choose one origin so that you can understand my kind of participation.

Rima — sociolinguist: Then a yes or no answer classifies learning order in a simplified way and does not describe willingness to read. Even the classification fits Layth’s experience poorly. If we want to know the kind of participation, why not ask about it directly?

Umar — student: I prefer that because I do not want my hesitation to be understood as retracting my self-description. I can be an Arabic speaker and a learner of reading aloud at the same time; I see no contradiction here.

Nadir — moderator: I will remove the first-language question from this round’s form. We will ask about the desired kind of participation, with an optional field for what helps the person read. This changes our instrument; it does not rename people.

Layth — multilingual writer: I also hope the new field will not become a reason to introduce me as a writer who overcame his accent. I do not regard it as an obstacle I got rid of. I want discussion of the text I submitted, not a story assumed behind it.

Rima — sociolinguist: That clarifies a difference between a description you choose and an interpretation someone else supplies. The interpretation may seem complimentary to its author, but it still needs support. Good intention does not make this story your story.

Umar — student: As for me, I like saying that Arabic is my first language, even if the form does not need that information. Removing the question frees me from a specific expectation, but I do not want it understood as banning that description.

Nadir — moderator: We will not ban it. We will ask each participant for a short introduction of their choosing, and they may give only their name. The new membership wording will say that the club is open to those wishing to practise writing in Arabic and discuss texts respectfully.

Layth — multilingual writer: That describes what I came to do, not what I am presumed to have been before arriving. But I think my belonging to this writing precedes the club’s acceptance of me. You provide a place for my work; you do not give me its origin.

Rima — sociolinguist: I understand that meaning and want to distinguish it from being a member of this club. In our discussion the word points sometimes to a connection a person describes, and sometimes to a position within a particular group. Mixing them changes the question.

Umar — student: I do not feel I belong to the club merely because my form is accepted. I need to see how others listen when I stumble. My connection to the language does not await their permission, but my feeling about this place is affected by what they do here.

Nadir — moderator: Then a wording change is not enough to judge your next experience. At the next meeting I will ask who wants to read, and will not assign anyone the role because of their language description. You may contribute only a written text.

Layth — multilingual writer: I also want to be introduced as a multilingual writer if I choose that. Removing it to avoid embarrassment could be another way of deciding who I am on my behalf. The choice I ask for includes mentioning and not mentioning it.

Rima — sociolinguist: That is why I do not propose one linguistic description for everyone. I propose separating what organising activities needs from what a person chooses for self-description. An optional field loses its meaning if we interpret leaving it blank as a deficiency.

Umar — student: I will write in my introduction that I am an Arabic speaker learning to read before an audience. I want neither a description that hides my difficulty nor one that reduces me to it. This suits me now; I do not ask Layth to use it.

Nadir — moderator: I will give that introduction as you want it. I will ask Layth about his preferred wording before the meeting. I will not add an explanation of his accent myself; that is not a condition for presenting his text for discussion.

Layth — multilingual writer: This time I prefer only my name and text’s title. That does not mean other languages no longer matter to me; it is a choice of what I want to highlight at this meeting. I may choose a longer introduction later.

Rima — sociolinguist: I will not read your choice as a position on every multilingual introduction. In the case we are discussing, the purpose of speaking and intended audience change. What we know is your present choice, not a rule for your whole life story.

Umar — student: A difference between us remains in the meaning of belonging. I connect my feeling about the club with repeated experience with its members, while Layth emphasises a connection others do not grant. I can understand his position without making it a complete description of what I await.

Nadir — moderator: I will not write that we agreed a definition of belonging. We agreed to revise the form, introductions and allocation of reading. I will send members the new wording, but we have not yet seen how they will respond to it at the next meeting.

Layth — multilingual writer: This is a change I want, even if it does not answer everything raised by the first welcome. I will return with a new text, not to prove my accent permits me to write, but to place the writing itself before new critics.

Rima — sociolinguist: After the meeting I will ask what the wording did in this club, not what it is presumed to do everywhere. We do not yet have members’ future accounts, and a clearer phrase alone does not guarantee a better experience.

Umar — student: I will then choose between reading my text aloud and submitting it in writing. I do not want improved reading to become another test of my belonging. It matters to me to have a place while I learn, not only after learning is finished.

Nadir — moderator: We will state this choice in the invitation to the next meeting. I will start by correcting my own introductions before describing the club as changed. What we can announce today is the procedure we will follow; its effect needs experience.

What to remember

  • Separate fluency, confidence, self-description and another person’s interpretation.
  • Recognise a choice to omit an identity label without turning it into a rejection of that identity.
  • Distinguish a revised club procedure from agreement on belonging or evidence of improved experience.

Follow lianna as Umar explains why changing the question matters without retracting his self-description.
