نَدِيمٌ: لِنُثْبِتِ الْبَدِيلَيْنِ قَبْلَ الْمُنَاقَشَةِ: عَرْضٌ ثَابِتٌ وَقِرَاءَةٌ هَادِئَةٌ، أَوْ عَرْضٌ مُتَنَاوِبٌ وَجَلَسَاتُ ذَاكِرَةٍ. حَسَبَ خُطَّةِ هَذَا الْمَشْرُوعِ، تَقْبَلُ الْقَاعَةُ أَيًّا مِنْهُمَا. وَاللِّقَاءُ لِتَحْدِيدِ اسْتِخْدَامِهَا، لَا لِتَزْيِينِ قَرَارٍ سَابِقٍ بِالْمُوَافَقَةِ.
سَلْمَى: يَبْقَى لِتَوْصِيَتِي مَحَلٌّ؛ فَالرَّسَائِلُ فِي قِصَّتِنَا تَصِفُ خِلَافًا ثُمَّ صُلْحًا، وَفَصْلُهَا بَيْنَ شَهْرَيْنِ قَدْ يُخْفِي هَذَا التَّحَوُّلَ. أُرَجِّحُ الْعَرْضَ الثَّابِتَ لِهَذَا السَّبَبِ، وَلَوْ فَضَّلَ الْحَاضِرُونَ اسْتِخْدَامًا آخَرَ. هَذَا تَرْجِيحٌ، لَا ضَمَانٌ لِفَهْمِ كُلِّ زَائِرٍ.

دَانَا: وَأَنَا أَخْشَى أَنْ تُخْتَزَلَ رَغْبَتُنَا فِي إِرْضَاءٍ عَابِرٍ. الْجَلْسَةُ تُتِيحُ لِأَصْحَابِ الرَّسَائِلِ الْمُتَخَيَّلِينَ أَنْ يَرْوُوا مَا لَمْ يَكْتُبُوهُ؛ وَهَذَا غَرَضٌ آخَرُ، لَا نُسْخَةٌ ضَعِيفَةٌ مِنَ الْقِرَاءَةِ الْهَادِئَةِ.
نَدِيمٌ: عِبَارَةُ «أَقَلُّ جَوْدَةً» تَحْتَاجُ إِلَى مِعْيَارٍ. إِذَا كَانَ الْمِعْيَارُ تَتَبُّعَ الرَّسَائِلِ، فَلِسَلْمَى تَقْدِيرُهَا؛ وَإِذَا كَانَ إِشْرَاكَ أَصْحَابِهَا، فَلِدَانَا حُجَّةٌ مُخْتَلِفَةٌ. لَا يَجْعَلُ اخْتِلَافُ الْغَرَضِ الْمُقَارَنَةَ مُسْتَحِيلَةً، لَكِنَّهُ يَمْنَعُ إِخْفَاءَ الْغَرَضِ وَرَاءَ حُكْمٍ وَاحِدٍ.
سَلْمَى: يُمْكِنُنِي تَقْيِيمُ تَرْتِيبِ الْمَادَّةِ فِي الْبَدِيلَيْنِ. أَمَّا وَزْنُ الْقِرَاءَةِ الْفَرْدِيَّةِ إِزَاءَ الْحَدِيثِ الْمُشْتَرَكِ، فَلَيْسَ نَتِيجَةً أَسْتَخْرِجُهَا مِنْ تَرْتِيبِ الرَّسَائِلِ. لَوْ وَصَفْتُ رَغْبَتَكُمْ بِأَنَّهَا خَطَأٌ فَنِّيٌّ، لَوَسَّعْتُ اخْتِصَاصِي إِلَى غَيْرِ مَحَلِّهِ.
رَامِي: أَقْبَلُ ذَلِكَ، وَلَكِنَّنَا اِشْتَرَيْنَا الْبِطَاقَاتِ الْمَطْبُوعَةَ لِلْعَرْضِ الثَّابِتِ. لَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ نَهْدِرَ عَمَلًا أُنْجِزَ. هَلْ يَجُوزُ أَنْ نَعُدَّ هَذَا سَبَبًا لِإِبْقَاءِ الْخِيَارِ الْأَوَّلِ، أَمْ سَتُعَدُّ كُلُّ كَلِمَةٍ عَنْهُ ضَغْطًا عَلَى الْحَاضِرِينَ؟
دَانَا: اُذْكُرِ الْبِطَاقَاتِ وَمَا يُمْكِنُ اسْتِخْدَامُهُ مِنْهَا، وَلَا تُقَدِّمْهَا كَدَيْنٍ عَلَيْنَا. إِنَّ شِرَاءَهَا سَبَقَ سُؤَالَنَا، وَمُوَافَقَتَنَا الْآنَ لَنْ تُغَيِّرَ ذَلِكَ التَّرْتِيبَ. يُمْكِنُ أَنْ نَخْتَارَ الْعَرْضَ الثَّابِتَ، لَكِنْ لَنْ يَكُونَ الشِّرَاءُ نَفْسُهُ مُوَافَقَةً مِنَّا.
نَدِيمٌ: وَلِنُسَجِّلْ أَنَّ الْقَرَارَ الْيَوْمَ سَيَتَّخِذُهُ الْمُشَارِكُونَ الِاثْنَا عَشَرَ الْمُسَجَّلُونَ فِي هَذَا اللِّقَاءِ، وَفْقَ تَرْتِيبِ الْمَشْرُوعِ الْمُتَخَيَّلِ. لَا نَقُولُ إِنَّهُمْ كُلُّ أَهْلِ الْحَيِّ، وَلَا أَنَّ سُكُوتَ الْغَائِبِينَ رِضًا. سَنَنْشُرُ الْخِيَارَ وَحُدُودَ مَنْ اخْتَارَهُ مَعًا.
سَلْمَى: إِذَا اخْتَرْتُمُ الْعَرْضَ الْمُتَنَاوِبَ، فَسَأَقْتَرِحُ أَنْ تَبْقَى خَرِيطَةُ الرَّسَائِلِ وَتَوَارِيخِهَا فِي كُلِّ شَهْرٍ. لَيْسَ ذَلِكَ شَرْطًا لِصِحَّةِ اخْتِيَارِكُمْ، بَلْ تَعْدِيلٌ يُقَلِّلُ النَّقْصَ الَّذِي شَرَحْتُهُ. وَسَأَظَلُّ أُفَضِّلُ الْعَرْضَ الثَّابِتَ لِمَنْ يَزُورُ الْقَاعَةَ مَرَّةً وَاحِدَةً.
رَامِي: هَذَا يُسَاعِدُنِي عَلَى تَفْسِيرِ التَّغْيِيرِ، لَكِنَّ الْجَلَسَاتِ تَحْتَاجُ إِلَى مَنْ يُرَتِّبُهَا. لَا أَرَى أَنْ نَعِدَ بِحَدِيثٍ أُسْبُوعِيٍّ ثُمَّ نَتْرُكَ عِبْءَ الْمُتَابَعَةِ لِمَنْ اِقْتَرَحَهُ. مَا الْمَسْؤُولِيَّةُ الَّتِي تَطْلُبُونَ مِنِّي أَنْ أَلْتَزِمَ بِهَا؟
دَانَا: تَطْلُبُ مَجْمُوعَتُنَا مِنَ الْمَكْتَبِ تَرْتِيبَ الْمَوَاعِيدِ وَإِرْسَالَ الدَّعَوَاتِ؛ وَنَتَعَهَّدُ نَحْنُ بِتَجْمِيعِ مَوْضُوعَاتِ أَوَّلِ شَهْرَيْنِ. هَذَا تَوْزِيعٌ مُقْتَرَحٌ لِلْعَمَلِ، لَا دَلِيلٌ عَلَى أَنَّنَا نَعْرِفُ سَلَفًا مَنْ سَيَحْضُرُ.
نَدِيمٌ: وَهَلْ تَقْبَلُ دَانَا أَنْ يَكُونَ تَبَنِّي الْجَلَسَاتِ اخْتِيَارًا لِأَوْلَوِيَّةٍ، لَا إِثْبَاتًا لِأَنَّ الْعَرْضَ الثَّابِتَ بِلَا فَائِدَةٍ؟ يُهِمُّنِي أَنْ يَسْمَعَ مَنْ يُفَضِّلُ الْقِرَاءَةَ اعْتِرَافًا بِمَا سَيَفْقِدُهُ، قَبْلَ أَنْ نَطْلُبَ مِنْهُ قَبُولَ النَّتِيجَةِ الْمُعْلَنَةِ.

Dana — resident: That is precisely my objection: you invited us to choose after announcing the result. We want a display that changes monthly and a weekly session for sharing memories. If that is possible in the proposal, why was our meeting called a choice about details?
Nadim — moderator: Let us establish the two alternatives before discussing them: a permanent display with quiet reading, or rotating displays with memory sessions. Under this project’s plan, the hall can accommodate either. The meeting is to determine its use, not embellish an earlier decision with approval.
Salma — archive-display expert: My recommendation still has a place: the letters in our story describe a dispute followed by reconciliation, and separating them between two months may obscure that change. I favour the permanent display for that reason, even if those present prefer another use. This is a judgement, not a guarantee that every visitor will understand.
Rami — official: Then may I say that the rotating exhibition is lower quality? I need to explain changing the announcement, and fear that the project will look as if it abandoned the expert’s view to please those present. What wording preserves the value of your advice?
Dana — resident: And I fear our preference being reduced to passing appeasement. A session allows the fictional letter writers to tell what they did not write; that is another purpose, not a weak version of quiet reading.
Nadim — moderator: “Lower quality” needs a criterion. If the criterion is following the letters, Salma has her assessment; if it is involving their writers, Dana has a different argument. A difference in purpose does not make comparison impossible, but prevents hiding the purpose behind a single judgement.
Salma — archive-display expert: I can assess the organisation of the material in both alternatives. But the weight of individual reading against shared conversation is not a conclusion I can extract from arranging the letters. If I described your preference as a technical error, I would extend my specialism beyond its scope.
Rami — official: I accept that, but we bought the printed cards for the permanent display. I do not want to waste completed work. May we count that as a reason to retain the first option, or will every word about it be treated as pressure on those present?
Dana — resident: State the cards and what can be used from them, but do not present them as a debt we owe. Their purchase preceded asking us, and our approval now will not change that sequence. We could choose the permanent display, but the purchase itself would not constitute our approval.
Nadim — moderator: Let us record that today’s decision will be made by the twelve registered participants in this meeting, under the fictional project’s arrangement. We do not say that they are all the neighbourhood’s residents or that absent people’s silence is consent. We will publish both the choice and the limits of who made it.
Salma — archive-display expert: If you choose the rotating display, I will suggest retaining a map of the letters and their dates every month. That is not a condition for your choice to be valid, but an adjustment that reduces the gap I described. I will still prefer the permanent display for someone visiting the hall only once.
Rami — official: That helps me explain the change, but the sessions need someone to organise them. I do not think we should promise weekly conversation then leave the follow-up burden to whoever proposed it. What responsibility are you asking me to commit to?
Dana — resident: Our group asks the office to arrange dates and send invitations, while we commit to gathering topics for the first two months. This is a proposed division of work, not evidence that we already know who will attend.
Nadim — moderator: Will Dana accept that adopting sessions is choosing a priority, not proving that the permanent display is useless? I want those who favour reading to hear recognition of what they will lose before we ask them to accept the announced outcome.
Salma — archive-display expert: I would add that the map does not restore every missing detail. Each month’s version will show some letters, while others remain absent for the visitor. If we call that a complete sequence, we will not have addressed the gap, only changed its name.
Rami — official: I will take responsibility for dates and invitations if the sessions are chosen. I will correct the announcement by saying that the first option was announced before this meeting. I will not write that we consulted people and then began work, because that reverses the order.
Dana — resident: I accept the account of what is lost, and the permanent map, but not turning the session into a monthly lecture about the permanent exhibition. The alternative will remain different in how it uses the hall. The speakers here have experiences of their own, and may choose a topic the displayed letters do not contain.

Nadim — moderator: We will mention both without describing the session as an addition to the exhibition. It is part of the selected use, and one part can be attended without the other.
Salma — archive-display expert: I will work on the sequence map for the adopted option, and state in my note why I prefer the other one. Advising on implementation does not mean I have withdrawn my assessment, nor that the participants have abandoned their choice.

Our choice has a stated justification, and need not claim that everyone who helped create it wanted it.
