مَا الَّذِي يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ مَدْفُوعًا؟
وَلِيدٌ: تُغَطِّي اشْتِرَاكَاتُ صَحِيفَتِنَا الْمَحَلِّيَّةِ تَكَالِيفَ التَّحْرِيرِ الْأَسَاسِيَّةَ، لَكِنَّهَا لَا تُمَوِّلُ تَحْقِيقًا إِضَافِيًّا كُلَّ شَهْرٍ. أَقْتَرِحُ أَنْ نَجْعَلَ الْمَوَادَّ الطَّوِيلَةَ مَدْفُوعَةً، مَعَ إِبْقَاءِ الْأَخْبَارِ الْقَصِيرَةِ مُتَاحَةً لِلْجَمِيعِ.
مَهَا: الطُّولُ مِقْيَاسٌ سَهْلٌ، لَكِنَّهُ لَا يَعْكِسُ أَهَمِّيَّةَ الْمَعْلُومَةِ. تَقْرِيرُنَا عَنْ إِلْغَاءِ مَحَطَّتَيْنِ لِلْحَافِلَاتِ طَوِيلٌ؛ لِأَنَّهُ يَشْرَحُ الْبَدَائِلَ وَأَوْقَاتَهَا، وَقَدْ يَحْتَاجُ إِلَيْهِ مَنْ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُ الِاشْتِرَاكَ.
نَبِيلٌ: أَنَا أَدْفَعُ لِأَنَّنِي أُرِيدُ اسْتِمْرَارَ هَذَا الْعَمَلِ. مَعَ ذَلِكَ، عِنْدَ التَّجْدِيدِ أَحْتَاجُ إِلَى فَهْمِ مَا يُضِيفُهُ اشْتِرَاكِي إِلَى مَا يَقْرَؤُهُ غَيْرُ الْمُشْتَرِكِ مَجَّانًا.
وَلِيدٌ: هَذَا مَا يُقْلِقُنِي. إِذَا أَتَحْنَا أَهَمَّ النَّتَائِجِ بِلَا مُقَابِلٍ، فَمَا الدَّافِعُ إِلَى الدَّفْعِ؟ اسْتَغْرَقَ تَحْقِيقُ الْمَحَطَّتَيْنِ سَبْعَةَ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ عَمَلِ مُرَاسِلَتِنَا، فَضْلًا عَنْ وَقْتِ التَّدْقِيقِ.
مَهَا: يَنْبَغِي أَنْ نُفَرِّقَ بَيْنَ التَّكْلِفَةِ وَوَظِيفَةِ النَّصِّ. مَوَاعِيدُ التَّغْيِيرِ وَالْبَدَائِلُ مَعْلُومَاتٌ خَدَمِيَّةٌ، أَمَّا شَرْحُ الْوَثَائِقِ وَطَرِيقَةِ تَحْلِيلِهَا فَيُمْكِنُ أَنْ يَكُونَ مَادَّةً إِضَافِيَّةً لِلْمُشْتَرِكِينَ.
نَبِيلٌ: أَتَفَهَّمُ التَّمْيِيزَ، وَلَكِنَّ الْخَبَرَ الْمَفْتُوحَ يَجِبُ أَنْ يَكُونَ مُكْتَمِلَ الْمَعْنَى. لَا أُرِيدُ أَنْ نَكْتُبَ عُنْوَانًا يُثِيرُ الْقَلَقَ، ثُمَّ نَحْجُبَ التَّوْضِيحَ الَّذِي يَحْتَاجُ إِلَيْهِ الْقَارِئُ لِفَهْمِهِ.
وَلِيدٌ: إِذَنْ نَنْشُرُ الْمَعْلُومَاتِ الْعَمَلِيَّةَ مَفْتُوحَةً. لَكِنَّ تَحْقِيقَنَا يَسْأَلُ أَيْضًا لِمَاذَا لَمْ تَشْمَلِ الْخُطَّةُ سُكَّانَ أَطْرَافِ الْحَيِّ. هَلْ نُتِيحُ هَذِهِ النَّتِيجَةَ، أَمْ نَحْتَفِظُ بِهَا لِمَنْ يُمَوِّلُونَ الْعَمَلَ؟
مَهَا: هَذِهِ النَّتِيجَةُ تَخُصُّ أَشْخَاصًا نُرِيدُ سَمَاعَ رَدِّهِمْ. سَأَنْشُرُ الْخُلَاصَةَ مَعَ أَدِلَّتِهَا الْأَسَاسِيَّةِ وَرَدِّ الْجِهَةِ الْمَعْنِيَّةِ، وَأَتْرُكُ لِلْمَادَّةِ الْمَدْفُوعَةِ شَرْحًا أَوْسَعَ لِمَرَاحِلِ الْبَحْثِ وَالصُّعُوبَاتِ الَّتِي وَاجَهَتْنَا.
نَبِيلٌ: أُفَضِّلُ أَنْ تَكُونَ الْقِيمَةُ الْإِضَافِيَّةُ عُمْقًا وَوَقْتًا نُوَفِّرُهُ لِلْقَارِئِ، لَا نِصْفَ حَقِيقَةٍ نَبِيعُ نِصْفَهَا الْآخَرَ. أَقْرَأُ شُرُوحَ الْوَثَائِقِ إِذَا أَرَدْتُ تَتَبُّعَ الْعَمَلِ بِتَفْصِيلٍ أَكْبَرَ.
وَلِيدٌ: هَذَا تَصَوُّرٌ مَقْنِعٌ تَحْرِيرِيًّا، لَكِنَّهُ لَيْسَ ضَمَانًا مَالِيًّا. فِي عَرْضِنَا الْأَخِيرِ اشْتَرَكَ ثَلَاثُونَ قَارِئًا بِسِعْرٍ مُخَفَّضٍ، وَجَدَّدَ سِتَّةٌ مِنْهُمْ فَقَطْ بِالسِّعْرِ الْكَامِلِ بَعْدَ انْتِهَاءِ الْعَرْضِ.
مَهَا: لِذَلِكَ لَا نَسْتَطِيعُ الِاحْتِفَالَ بِعَدَدِ الِاشْتِرَاكَاتِ الْأُولَى وَحْدَهُ. هَلْ نَعْرِفُ مَا قَرَأَهُ هَؤُلَاءِ، وَمَا إِذَا كَانَ سَبَبُ الْمُغَادَرَةِ السِّعْرَ أَمْ عَدَمَ وُضُوحِ الْفَائِدَةِ؟
نَبِيلٌ: وَأَضِيفُ احْتِمَالًا ثَالِثًا: رُبَّمَا اشْتَرَكُوا لِتَقْرِيرٍ وَاحِدٍ. عَدَمُ التَّجْدِيدِ لَا يَعْنِي بِالضَّرُورَةِ أَنَّهُمْ لَمْ يَجِدُوا قِيمَةً، بَلْ قَدْ يَعْنِي أَنَّ حَاجَتَهُمْ كَانَتْ مُؤَقَّتَةً.
وَلِيدٌ: لَدَيْنَا بَيَانَاتُ الْقِرَاءَةِ، وَلَا نَمْلِكُ أَسْبَابَ الْمُغَادَرَةِ إِلَّا لِثَلَاثَةِ أَشْخَاصٍ. سَأُرْسِلُ اسْتِبْيَانًا اخْتِيَارِيًّا، وَلَنْ أَعُدَّ صَمْتَ الْبَاقِينَ مُوَافَقَةً عَلَى تَفْسِيرٍ وَاحِدٍ لِمَا حَدَثَ.
مَهَا: وَيَجِبُ أَنْ نَحْسُبَ تَكْلِفَةَ الْمَزَايَا أَيْضًا. إِذَا وَعَدْنَا بِشَرْحٍ مُفَصَّلٍ لِكُلِّ خَبَرٍ، فَسَنُزِيدُ الْعَمَلَ قَبْلَ أَنْ نَعْرِفَ إِنْ كَانَ الْإِيرَادُ الْجَدِيدُ يَسُدُّ الْفَجْوَةَ.
نَبِيلٌ: وَلَيْسَ مِنَ الضَّرُورِيِّ أَنْ تَكْثُرَ الْمَوَادُّ لِأَشْعُرَ بِالْفَائِدَةِ. أُفَضِّلُ مَلَفًّا أُسْبُوعِيًّا وَاضِحًا يَرْبِطُ التَّطَوُّرَاتِ بَعْضَهَا بِبَعْضٍ، عَلَى رَسَائِلَ كَثِيرَةٍ تَعِيدُ مَا قَرَأْتُهُ فِي الْمَوْقِعِ.
وَلِيدٌ: نَسْتَطِيعُ تَمْوِيلَ مَلَفٍّ وَاحِدٍ أُسْبُوعِيًّا مِنَ الْمَوَارِدِ الْحَالِيَّةِ، مَعَ شَرْحٍ لِوَثَائِقِ كُلِّ تَحْقِيقٍ نُنْجِزُهُ فِعْلًا. وَنُؤَجِّلُ وَعْدَ التَّحْقِيقِ الشَّهْرِيِّ الْإِضَافِيِّ حَتَّى يَتَوَفَّرَ لَهُ تَمْوِيلٌ مُسْتَمِرٌّ.
مَهَا: أُوَافِقُ عَلَى هَذَا الْحَدِّ. وَأُرِيدُ تَوْضِيحَ أَنَّ الْمُشْتَرِكَ لَا يَشْتَرِي حَقَّ التَّدَخُّلِ فِي النَّتَائِجِ؛ فَقَدْ يَكُونُ مَوْضُوعُ التَّحْقِيقِ مَشْرُوعًا يُؤَيِّدُهُ أَوْ شَرِكَةً يَعْمَلُ فِيهَا.
نَبِيلٌ: هَذَا عَادِلٌ. يُمْكِنُنِي اقْتِرَاحُ سُؤَالٍ وَالِاعْتِرَاضُ عَلَى اسْتِنْتَاجٍ، لَكِنَّ دَفْعِي لَا يَجْعَلُ رَأْيِي أَدْقَّ مِنْ رَأْيِ غَيْرِي. أَتَوَقَّعُ رَدًّا مُحْتَرَمًا، لَا نَتِيجَةً تُرْضِينِي مُسْبَقًا.
وَلِيدٌ: كُنْتُ أُفَكِّرُ فِي لِقَاءٍ لِلْمُشْتَرِكِينَ مَعَ الْمُحَرِّرِينَ. نُقَدِّمُ فِيهِ شَرْحًا لِلْعَمَلِ وَنَسْمَعُ أَسْئِلَتَهُمْ، لَكِنَّنَا لَنْ نَعِدَهُمْ بِالِاطِّلَاعِ عَلَى النَّتَائِجِ قَبْلَ مَنْ تَعْنِيهِمُ الْمَعْلُومَاتُ الْخَدَمِيَّةُ.
مَهَا: وَإِذَا كَشَفَ سُؤَالٌ فِي اللِّقَاءِ خَطَأً فِي الْخَبَرِ، فَلَنْ نَحْصُرَ التَّصْحِيحَ فِي الْمُشْتَرِكِينَ. يَظْهَرُ التَّصْحِيحُ لِكُلِّ مَنْ يَقْرَأُ الْخَبَرَ، مَعَ بَيَانِ مَا تَغَيَّرَ وَسَبَبِهِ.
نَبِيلٌ: بَقِيَتْ نُقْطَةُ الْوُصُولِ. قَدْ يُرِيدُ شَخْصٌ قِرَاءَةَ الشَّرْحِ الْمُوَسَّعِ وَلَا يَقْدِرُ عَلَى الِاشْتِرَاكِ. هَلْ يُمْكِنُ لِلْمُشْتَرِكِ مَنْحُ رَابِطِ قِرَاءَةٍ لِشَخْصٍ آخَرَ دُونَ مُشَارَكَةِ حِسَابِهِ؟
وَلِيدٌ: يُمْكِنُنَا إِتَاحَةُ رَابِطَيْ هَدِيَّةٍ شَهْرِيًّا لِكُلِّ مُشْتَرِكٍ، لِمَادَّتَيْنِ يَخْتَارُهُمَا. لَكِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَا يَحُلُّ مُشْكِلَةَ مَنْ لَا يَعْرِفُ مُشْتَرِكًا؛ لِذَلِكَ لَا أَعْرِضُهُ بَدِيلًا عَنِ الْمَعْلُومَاتِ الْمَفْتُوحَةِ.
مَهَا: وَسَنَنْشُرُ قَاعِدَةَ الِاخْتِيَارِ بِلُغَةٍ وَاضِحَةٍ: الْمَعْلُومَاتُ الْخَدَمِيَّةُ وَالنَّتَائِجُ الْأَسَاسِيَّةُ بِأَدِلَّتِهَا وَالتَّصْحِيحَاتُ مَفْتُوحَةٌ؛ وَتُتَاحُ الشُّرُوحُ الْمُوَسَّعَةُ وَالْمَلَفُّ الْأُسْبُوعِيُّ بِاشْتِرَاكٍ مَدْفُوعٍ. وَأُرَاجِعُ الْحَالَاتِ الْحُدُودِيَّةَ قَبْلَ النَّشْرِ مَعَ الْمُرَاسِلِ الْمَعْنِيِّ.
نَبِيلٌ: أَرْجُو أَنْ تَظْهَرَ هَذِهِ الْحُدُودُ قَبْلَ الدَّفْعِ، وَأَنْ يُذْكَرَ سِعْرُ التَّجْدِيدِ بِوُضُوحٍ فِي أَيِّ عَرْضٍ. لَا يَكْفِي أَنْ يَكُونَ الِاشْتِرَاكُ مُفِيدًا إِذَا كَانَ الْوَعْدُ مُلْتَبِسًا.
وَلِيدٌ: سَأُحَدِّثُ صَفْحَةَ الِاشْتِرَاكِ قَبْلَ الْعَرْضِ الْقَادِمِ. وَسَأُقَارِنُ إِيرَادَ التَّجْدِيدِ بِتَكْلِفَةِ الْمَزَايَا خِلَالَ ثَلَاثَةِ أَشْهُرٍ، مَعَ فَصْلِ أَثَرِ السِّعْرِ الْمُخَفَّضِ عَنْ أَثَرِ الْعَرْضِ التَّحْرِيرِيِّ نَفْسِهِ.
مَهَا: وَسَأُعِدُّ نَمُوذَجًا لِلْمَلَفِّ الْأُسْبُوعِيِّ يُمْكِنُ قِرَاءَتُهُ قَبْلَ الِاشْتِرَاكِ. إِذَا بَقِيَ الْعَجْزُ، فَسَنُرَاجِعُ تَكْلِفَةَ الْمَزَايَا وَسِعْرَهَا، وَلَنْ نُغَيِّرَ حُدُودَ الْوُصُولِ الْمُعْلَنَةَ لِسَدِّهِ بِصَمْتٍ.

Walid — publisher: Our local newspaper’s subscriptions cover basic editorial costs, but they do not fund an additional investigation each month. I propose charging for long articles while keeping short news items available to everyone.
Maha — editor: Length is an easy measure, but it does not reflect the information’s importance. Our report about removing two bus stops is long because it explains the alternatives and their times, and someone unable to subscribe may need it.
Nabil — subscriber: I pay because I want this work to continue. Even so, at renewal I need to understand what my subscription adds to what a non-subscriber reads for free.
Walid — publisher: That is what worries me. If we make the most important findings free, what motivates payment? The bus-stop investigation took seven days of our reporter’s work, as well as time for checking.
Maha — editor: We should distinguish the cost from the text’s function. Change dates and alternatives are service information, while an explanation of the documents and how we analysed them could be additional material for subscribers.
Nabil — subscriber: I understand the distinction, but the open article must make complete sense. I do not want us to write an alarming headline and then withhold the clarification readers need to understand it.
Walid — publisher: Then we will publish the practical information openly. But our investigation also asks why the plan did not include residents on the neighbourhood’s outskirts. Do we release that finding, or reserve it for those funding the work?
Maha — editor: That finding concerns people whose responses we want to hear. I will publish the conclusion with its essential evidence and the relevant organisation’s response, and use the paid material for a fuller explanation of the research stages and difficulties we encountered.
Nabil — subscriber: I would prefer the added value to be depth and time saved for readers, not half a truth whose other half we sell. I read document explanations when I want to follow the work in greater detail.
Walid — publisher: That is a convincing editorial approach, but not a financial guarantee. In our last offer, thirty readers subscribed at a discounted price, and only six renewed at the full price after the offer ended.
Maha — editor: So we cannot celebrate the initial subscription count alone. Do we know what these readers read, and whether they left because of the price or because the benefit was unclear?
Nabil — subscriber: I would add a third possibility: perhaps they subscribed for one report. Not renewing does not necessarily mean they found no value; it may mean their need was temporary.
Walid — publisher: We have reading data, but reasons for leaving from only three people. I will send an optional survey and will not treat the others’ silence as agreement with one explanation of what happened.
Maha — editor: We must calculate the cost of benefits too. If we promise a detailed explanation for every news item, we will increase the work before knowing whether the new revenue closes the gap.
Nabil — subscriber: There does not have to be a large volume of material for me to see a benefit. I prefer a clear weekly briefing connecting developments to numerous messages repeating what I read on the website.
Walid — publisher: We can fund one weekly briefing from current resources, along with a document explanation for each investigation we actually complete. We will postpone promising an additional monthly investigation until it has continuing funding.
Maha — editor: I agree to that limit. I also want to clarify that subscribers are not purchasing the right to influence findings: an investigation may concern a project they support or a company they work for.
Nabil — subscriber: That is fair. I can suggest a question and challenge a conclusion, but my payment does not make my opinion more accurate than someone else’s. I expect a respectful response, not a result tailored to please me in advance.
Walid — publisher: I was considering a subscribers’ meeting with the editors. We would explain our work and hear their questions, but we will not promise them access to findings before people who need the service information.
Maha — editor: If a question at the meeting reveals an error in an article, we will not restrict the correction to subscribers. The correction will be visible to everyone reading the article, explaining what changed and why.
Nabil — subscriber: There is still the question of access. Someone may want to read the extended explanation but be unable to subscribe. Could a subscriber give another person a reading link without sharing their account?
Walid — publisher: We can provide two gift links a month per subscriber, for two pieces they choose. But that does not solve access for people who do not know a subscriber, so I do not present it as a replacement for open information.
Maha — editor: We will publish the selection rule in clear language: service information, essential findings with their evidence, and corrections are open; extended explanations and the weekly briefing are paid. I will review borderline cases with the relevant reporter before publication.
Nabil — subscriber: I hope these boundaries will be visible before payment and that any offer clearly states the renewal price. It is not enough for a subscription to be useful if its promise is ambiguous.
Walid — publisher: I will update the subscription page before the next offer. Over three months, I will compare renewal revenue with the cost of benefits, distinguishing the effect of the discounted price from the editorial offering itself.
Maha — editor: I will prepare a sample weekly briefing that can be read before subscribing. If the shortfall persists, we will review the benefits’ cost and price, and will not silently change the announced access boundaries to cover it.
Nabil — subscriber: Then I can assess the offer on a clear basis. Supporting the newspaper and wanting personal value are not incompatible, as long as the offer is honest and essential information reaches the people it concerns.
