The event host introduced Samer as “an expert in the city’s history.” Samer restored audio recordings in the archive; he did not investigate accounts of the city. He saw the bridge photograph on the screen. He had agreed to the photograph, not to the wording of the introduction. He remembered requesting a session on preserving sound. The host, however, had told him that a historical title would attract a wider audience than the workshop title.
A man raised his hand and asked, “When did the bridge open?” Samer looked at the tape’s card; it bore a date without the writer’s name. The host said the answer was written in front of him. “This is a date on the card, not a date I have verified,” Samer said. “Restoration is not historical investigation.” The man fell silent, leaving his hand raised for another moment.
Samer played the working copy of the recording. He reduced a buzz that had been masking the voice, making a sentence about the bridge clearer. Then he reached a two-second break and left it as it was. The host asked whether he could complete the phrase. Samer said he could guess words, but could not attribute them to the speaker, whose name was unknown.
A woman opened her bag and took out a bridge photograph from her father’s collection. She said its reverse bore a date in his handwriting and offered to bring the original for comparison. Samer thanked her and proposed a meeting with the staff member responsible for photographs. He did not combine the two dates into one answer: clearer sound did not make what it said correct, and the photograph needed an independent reading too.
After the event, the host remained arranging the chairs, with the old title still on the screen. A quiet listener approached Samer and asked to hear the recording again. At the gap he asked, “Was there a name here?” Samer replayed the two silent seconds and said, “I don’t know.” This time the question was not about the bridge’s date. The listener’s eyes remained on the device.

Arabic Relative Pronouns: Joining Ideas with Alladhi and Allati
الْمُتَحَدِّثِ الَّذِي لَمْ يُعْرَفِ اسْمُهُ
Alladhi describes a definite masculine singular speaker; hu in ismuhu links the clause back to that speaker.
Laysa in Arabic: Is Not and Is Not Here
لَيْسَ التَّرْمِيمُ تَحْقِيقًا تَارِيخِيًّا
Laysa denies an identity: al-tarmimu stays nominative and tahqiqan is the accusative predicate.
