C2 · Conversation 33 · Modern Standard Arabic

Interpret attribution, collective pronouns and qualified concessions while preserving a valued memory without declaring either the past or present universally better.

ABOUT THIS CONVERSATION

Historian Nadir, grandfather Yusuf and young adult Layla prepare a fictional neighbourhood memory display. Welcoming courtyard evenings carry real personal value, but someone who returned late from work and a person serving tea complicate a caption claiming that everyone used to be closer.

Nadir — historian: We are preparing a memory display for an imagined neighbourhood, and the family materials here are invented. The draft proposes that neighbours were closer in the past. Before printing it, I want to know whom this comparison includes and what supports it.

Yusuf — grandparent: I used to return from work and find my neighbours in the courtyard after dinner. Sitting with them was a comfort to me; one would ask about me before I spoke. I do not want that intimacy to disappear behind our qualifications.

Layla — young adult: I want to preserve it too, but my aunt Muna wrote that she returned from work after the gathering had dispersed. She did not describe the neighbours as cold; she said the timing left her no place in that closeness.

Nadir — historian: Then the two accounts do not describe the same experience. The gathering comforted Yusuf, while its timing was a barrier for Muna. The problem lies in extending the collective pronoun, not in a requirement that one memory be false or imagined.

Yusuf — grandparent: I understand the distinction, but I heard the first question as accusing me of prettifying the past. I did not invent the person who asked about me. If we narrow every sentence, will the story not seem to say nothing about the neighbourhood?

Layla — young adult: Your memory is not worthless because it is limited. I also have a recording in which my mother says she carried the tea and then returned to the kitchen. She contributed her work to the gathering, but rarely sat with you.

Nadir — historian: That is a third account, and it does not repeat Muna’s. There is someone whom the timing excluded, and someone who made the gathering possible through work our story omitted. Describing presence alone may conceal this difference between participation and service.

Yusuf — grandparent: I thought the conversation in the kitchen was part of the same get-together. I did not ask her whether she wanted to sit down. That is a gap in my knowledge of her experience, but it does not erase the companionship I myself found.

Layla — young adult: I asked her about that in the recording. She said she enjoyed visits from some women neighbours, but tired of being expected to serve every time. I also do not want to turn her fatigue into a hatred of the gathering that she never expressed.

Nadir — historian: Here the story becomes richer, not poorer. Companionship and fatigue can coexist in the same memory. A general statement levels different experiences, whereas attributing a statement to its speaker preserves its value and shows its limits.

Yusuf — grandparent: What if we wrote that we used to be closer and then added my name beneath the statement? I want my voice to remain audible, but I am no longer certain whom I place alongside me inside that broad pronoun.

Layla — young adult: The reader may understand you to be speaking for the neighbourhood’s residents. Let us state what you yourself found in the gathering. Nor do I like the alternative heading that describes the present as better; it jumps to another judgement.

Nadir — historian: True; we have no comparable account of everyone’s life today. We are comparing memories from different positions, and have no scale that reduces the neighbourhood’s life to two periods. Criticising a rosy picture does not establish the opposite picture.

Yusuf — grandparent: Then can we recover something of the gathering without recovering her fatigue? I miss the spontaneous enquiry about a neighbour, not an old timetable with everything it contained. For me, nostalgia is more a desire for that closeness than a plan to return.

Layla — young adult: For our next gathering I can share out the preparation and ask the invitees about timing. But my friend works evenings now too; calling the meeting new will not suffice to say that it accommodates her.

Nadir — historian: That is a proposal to change a particular arrangement, not evidence that we have overcome the problem. After asking, we will know who can attend and who declines. Let us not put the outcome of a meeting that has not happened into the memory display.

Yusuf — grandparent: Then I want a sentence I can sign: the gathering gave me companionship that I miss. It does not say everyone was happier, but neither does it shame me for loving what I experienced or for speaking about it.

Layla — young adult: I will put it under your name, alongside my mother’s words and Muna’s, attributed to them. I do not want their voices to appear in a tiny footnote as though they were a secondary objection, while your memory alone is read as the history of the whole neighbourhood.

Nadir — historian: We will place the accounts alongside one another in equally sized type and explain that they are their speakers’ memories. We will not fill the silence of people we have not asked with assumed agreement. Even these three voices do not encompass every possible neighbourhood experience.

Yusuf — grandparent: My only reservation is about describing my story as gilded memory in your introduction. The description seems to judge my honesty before hearing me. I accept narrowing the statement’s scope, but I do not see my love of the gathering as a defect needing treatment.

Layla — young adult: And my mother asked us not to hide her enjoyment of some visits. She wants the work she did named, not the enjoyment erased from her story. I therefore will not use her recording as a rebuttal that invalidates your memory altogether.

Nadir — historian: I will remove that description from my introduction; it preceded examination of the statement. We will use a heading naming the courtyard and the people whose memories these are, with your attributed sentence beneath it. This changes the presentation, rather than delivering a final judgement on the past.

Yusuf — grandparent: I am comfortable with that, and will still say I miss it. I do not need to prove that our whole life was better for my longing to be understandable. But the question of who did not sit with us will stay with me.

Layla — young adult: And I will not promise that our next gathering will restore the same feeling. We can change the timing and share the work, but companionship cannot be printed on an invitation card. We may find a different closeness, and may need to try again.

Nadir — historian: This plan will remain outside the accounts so that we do not confuse memory with a promise. The display will preserve what you loved and what was hidden from you, without asking the reader to choose a golden age or a triumphant present.

Yusuf — grandparent: I too will ask her about those evenings, not to make her correct my longing, but to hear what I never asked before. I will not put her next answer into her mouth now; what she has already said is preserved in the recording.

Layla — young adult: I will send the proposed texts to my mother and Muna before printing so they can see how we have presented their words. I do not expect them to endorse your longing or my plan; I want to know whether we have preserved the meaning of what they said.

What to remember

  • An attributed memory can be valuable while a collective claim drawn from it remains too broad.
  • Different experiences can coexist; naming excluded time and hidden work need not erase enjoyment.
  • Separate a proposed arrangement from its unobserved outcome and a personal longing from a verdict on an era.
