The till in Salma’s shop was the street’s last old cash register. It rang when its drawer opened and printed the total on a narrow strip. Her nephew said a small screen would make recording stock easier. She looked at the drawer and said her customers brought cash. She was not answering the question he had raised: he was talking about the record, while she was talking about payment.

A customer buying notebooks for a group project asked for a sheet listing names and quantities. She gave him the strip, but he said the total was not enough to explain to his colleagues what he had bought. She wrote him a list, and another customer returned while she was doing so. At closing, she could not find in her ledger how many notebooks had gone out. No money was missing from the till, but the shelf and the record disagreed.

She placed the screen beside the till for a week’s trial. She entered the stock names and put the cash in the drawer. A neighbour asked whether shopping now required a phone. Salma explained that the screen was for her own work, then wrote a sign saying so. She remembered her answer to her nephew: perhaps the tool was changing faster than the explanation accompanying it.

On the fifth day, the screen’s battery ran out. She continued selling and wrote the names on paper, then entered them that evening. The deferred work was considerable. Her nephew laughed about the till remaining, and she asked him to review with her how to keep the record during a stoppage. She wanted neither a screen that hid work nor to call every fault evidence that the old way had been better.

After the week, the screen and the till remained together. The neighbour read the sign, then asked for a type of paper no longer on the shelf. Salma opened the record to find when to order it and showed her an alternative sample. The screen had not enabled her to answer everything. When the neighbour put down the money, the drawer rang, and Salma looked up to hear another question about the paper’s texture.

What to remember

  • A change in the stock record does not itself impose a change in how a customer pays.
  • The trial exposes work and uncertainty that need explanation rather than a simple old-versus-new verdict.
