Rana: We are meeting to review the idea for a “Voices of the Neighbourhood” evening at school. We want to preserve something of the families’ dialect, and some students proposed a competition to choose the participant who best preserves the older pronunciation.
Nabil: I liked the idea at first. When I hear Lina with her friends, I do not hear some of the words my father used. I fear that with them we may lose a way of remembering our lives, not just sounds.
Lina: I understand your worry, and I love Grandad’s stories, but how I speak with my friends does not sum up my relationship with home. I use different expressions depending on whom I am speaking to, and that does not mean I am ashamed of our dialect.
Rana: Perhaps the competition has turned concern for memory into a judgement about speakers. I prepared a pronunciation list, but who can choose one voice to represent all the neighbourhood’s families?
Nabil: I realise my father and uncle pronounced some words differently, yet we considered both ways of speaking part of our dialect. It seems I combined two different voices into a more uniform memory.
Lina: When I recorded Grandma’s story, she corrected a word I used, then laughed and said her sister said it differently. I want people to hear that variety, not select an imaginary pure version for them.
Rana: Then we will not award marks for matching a single model. But how do we make the project useful for someone unfamiliar with the old words? I fear the evening could become beautiful voices whose context the audience cannot understand.
Nabil: We could begin with household tools and their names, and ask the storyteller when they used them. A word connected to a situation means more to me than a list I memorise and forget after the presentation.
Lina: I agree, provided we do not assume every family story is suitable for publication. Grandma let me keep her recording but refused permission to present a section about a disagreement with a neighbour. Preserving the voice does not override its owner’s wishes.
Rana: We will show each participant the clip we want to use and ask how they would like their name presented. Someone who agrees to being recorded at home has not necessarily agreed to a public presentation.
Nabil: Does that mean we will keep hesitation and repetition in the recording? I often pause to search for a word, and I might want that removed. I do not want authenticity to become a reason to embarrass me.
Lina: We can shorten the clip with your agreement as long as we do not change its meaning. We can say it is an edited extract, not the whole conversation. What I object to is rerecording every sentence until it sounds like Grandad.
Rana: I will write an accompanying description in Standard Arabic to explain the situation while retaining the recording in its dialect. If we find more than one pronunciation of a word, we will present those forms as they appear in our contributions, not a complete inventory of the neighbourhood’s speech.
Nabil: I want to understand the role of Standard Arabic here. Will it seem to be the serious language while dialect is left for nostalgia and laughter? I do not want us to preserve words by confining them to a small corner of life.
Lina: In my recording, Grandma discusses a difficult decision she made when moving, not a funny incident. Our choice of topics will show what we can express, so let us not limit ourselves to amusing anecdotes and light memories.
Rana: The Standard Arabic description explains things for a varied audience; it does not rank the value of voices. We will keep school writing assignments in Standard Arabic separate from this voluntary evening, with no grade attached to a family’s dialect.
Nabil: One question still worries me: if we record words and then do not use them, have we truly preserved them? I keep a recording of my father and rarely open it.
Lina: A recording preserves a moment, but it does not create a habit of conversation by itself. I would rather we sit and talk after listening to the clips and let children ask questions without fear of constant correction. I fall silent when my speech becomes an examination.
Rana: Let us make the evening a gathering for stories instead of a competition. Then anyone who wishes can take that gathering home in their own way. We do not need homework asking families to submit a report on their speech.
Nabil: I will try to ask Lina what she means by a new expression before describing it as strange. I cannot promise to like every expression, but listening to her may reveal something about her life.
Lina: I will ask about the words you miss, without promising to use them all. We can learn from one another: you are not merely a guardian of the past, and I am not a future copy of Grandma.
Rana: I will withdraw the competition announcement and write an invitation welcoming stories and questions from neighbourhood residents. We will explain that the number of clips is limited by the evening’s duration, not by a measure of their speakers’ authenticity.
Nabil: What about families who arrived recently? I do not want “Voices of the Neighbourhood” to suggest that only longstanding residents are entitled to speak. They may have questions that have not occurred to us.
Lina: We invite them to participate and ask every speaker to describe only their own experience rather than speaking for everyone. The evening may bring together contrasting voices; that brings it closer to our neighbourhood today.
Rana: Then we agree on a gathering with no winner, clips whose speakers approve their presentation, and explanations that aid understanding. We cannot decide which words will remain in use.
Nabil: Lina, will you sit with me this evening to listen to your grandfather’s recording? There is the name of a tool whose meaning I have forgotten too. I want us to look for it together, and I will not begin by asking why you do not know it.
Lina: Yes, that is an invitation I want to accept. I will bring a notebook so we can write what we understand and what remains unclear, not fill in a list of correct answers. Perhaps a story begins with a word neither of us knows.

- Distinguish permission to record from permission to present, and identify edited excerpts clearly.
- Create opportunities for shared storytelling without treating pronunciation as a test of belonging.
