Hanaa — engaged partner: I put our wedding guest list beside yours, Dad. Ours includes sixty people, and yours doubles that number. The disagreement is not only about expenses: I want to actually talk to my guests.

Basil — engaged partner: I want that too, but I do not want shortening the list to be understood as diminishing your friends’ importance. Could we begin with what these names mean to you?

Adil — Hanaa’s father: Some stood by us when I closed my shop, and I have not found an opportunity to thank them together. I imagined my daughter’s wedding as a moment when they could see that we had moved beyond that difficult time and had not forgotten their kindness.

Hanaa — engaged partner: I did not know you connected the celebration with that memory. I appreciate your loyalty, but our wedding cannot carry every occasion we never held. Does the thank-you have to happen on this day?

Basil — engaged partner: Yesterday I suggested a family lunch the following week, then realised I was adding another celebration under a simpler name. Who would organise it, and who would bear its cost? I do not want a solution that hides extra work.

Adil — Hanaa’s father: I was going to ask your aunt to organise the lunch, but I have not asked her yet. I may have treated her previous willingness as permanent agreement. If she declines, that will not mean she has let us down.

Hanaa — engaged partner: Then let us not promise anyone an additional lunch. As for the celebration itself, I would love to include my grandfather’s notebook of family messages. That is a tradition that makes me feel connected to him, and I do not want to remove it.

Basil — engaged partner: I like the notebook too. I suggest that whoever wishes can write in it, without everyone being asked to read their messages aloud. A message may be personal, and its writer may not be comfortable speaking before an audience.

Adil — Hanaa’s father: At my wedding, my father read five messages, and I remember his voice more than the decorations. When you removed the speeches from the programme, I felt you were excluding that part of our family life.

Hanaa — engaged partner: We removed the item because it included five long speeches whose texts we had not seen. We did not mean to silence you. I would be happy for you to read one message that you choose with us, provided it contains no story that embarrasses anyone.

Basil — engaged partner: My family has a message too, but its recording will be shorter than a live speech. I want us to agree on duration and content, without turning the two contributions into a comparison of the families’ standing.

Adil — Hanaa’s father: That reassures me: I do not want extra time to prove my importance. Still, I am surprised that you accept the notebook but reject having all the relatives make an entrance with you, when both are cherished memories for me.

Hanaa — engaged partner: The difference is that the notebook lets each person choose whether to take part, whereas the group entrance makes me perform a scene I do not feel comfortable with. Loving your memories does not mean I can repeat them all at my wedding.

Basil — engaged partner: I agree with her, and I do not want her to appear to be the only one objecting. Entering together is our joint decision. I will not tell my family that I accepted it merely to please her.

Adil — Hanaa’s father: I understand your position, but in my mind my financial contribution was tied to a larger celebration. I did not say that clearly, so the money appeared to be an unconditional gift, while I expected to help decide who would be invited.

Hanaa — engaged partner: Thank you for being frank. We have not paid a deposit yet, and we can choose a simpler venue using our savings. I would rather reduce the decorations than accept money and later disagree about what accepting it meant.

Basil — engaged partner: Let us separate two things: you may reconsider the amount you can offer, and we may reject a condition that does not suit us. Neither decision makes the other party less loving, even if it causes disappointment.

Adil — Hanaa’s father: I will keep my contribution as promised and genuinely treat it as a gift. I am not saying I am now happy with every detail, but I do not want my help to become a way of pressuring you.

Hanaa — engaged partner: That means a great deal to me. I want us to review the list using a clear criterion: relatives and friends with whom we remain in contact. We cannot invite someone simply because they invited us many years ago.

Basil — engaged partner: We should apply the criterion to both lists. I included an old colleague because I felt awkward, although we have not been in touch for some time. I will remove his name; otherwise I would be asking you to do something I do not accept for myself.

Adil — Hanaa’s father: How do we explain this to anyone who asks? I do not want to say the hall is small as though we had not chosen it, or shift the blame onto you to preserve my image in front of my friends.

Hanaa — engaged partner: We say that we chose a limited celebration that allows longer conversations, and acknowledge that this may disappoint some people. We do not need to invent an excuse or publicly rank people according to how close they are to us.

Basil — engaged partner: If you want to thank your friends, you can call them. You do not have to gather them at one event to tell them that their help has stayed in your memory.

Adil — Hanaa’s father: I will start with my friend Hasan tomorrow. I have delayed that conversation many times, using the excuse of waiting for a suitable opportunity. I will tell your aunt we have not decided on another lunch, before she starts organising it on her own initiative as she usually does.

Hanaa — engaged partner: Then we will keep the number at sixty, retain the notebook and one message from each family, and make our entrance together. We will read both message texts together before the celebration and ask permission from anyone whose personal story appears in them.

Basil — engaged partner: I will send my family the revised programme today and take my share of explaining it. I do not want Hanaa to be the one apologising for every choice we made together while I stay outside the disagreement.

Adil — Hanaa’s father: I still wish for a larger celebration, but I now see what you want to protect. Bring the notebook, Hanaa. Perhaps we will find a message that carries your grandfather’s voice without asking your wedding to repeat mine.
