When I failed my driving test, I told my instructor that I had been bad at everything. He did not agree; instead, he asked me to read the feedback calmly. My main problem was reversing to park the car. Whenever I approached the kerb, I rushed and turned the steering wheel more than necessary.
In earlier lessons, I preferred driving along streets I knew and asked to postpone the difficult exercise. This time, we agreed on a different plan. We would start each lesson by practising reversing in the training area, then go out onto the road. I asked the instructor not to give me all the answers before I had tried for myself.
The instructor placed orange cones to mark out a parking space. He explained the steps, then sat beside me and watched my attempt. On the first try, I stopped to understand the car’s position instead of rushing. After each attempt, I wrote one note about the error and how to correct it. At the end of the lesson, we read the notes together before leaving.
After three lessons, the instructor moved the cones. My first attempt did not work, but this time I knew the cause of the problem. I asked him about a movement I did not understand, then practised it. My anxiety did not disappear completely, but it no longer stopped me from thinking. When the instructor suggested a new test date, I felt better prepared than before.
In the second test, I misjudged the distance while parking, so I stopped and calmly corrected the car’s position. After the test, the examiner told me that I had passed. I called my instructor and thanked him, then asked about an extra lesson to practise on busy streets. When I returned home, I put the pass certificate inside the notebook I would take to the lesson.
