Common animal names in Arabic include قِطَّة (qitta, cat), كَلْب (kalb, dog), حِصَان (hisan, horse), جَمَل (jamal, camel), and فِيل (fil, elephant). Learn a small group first, then use the 25-name reference chart. These examples use Modern Standard Arabic.
01Start with five animal names
qitta
A common feminine noun.
kalb
A masculine noun.
hisan
A masculine noun.
jamal
A masculine noun.
fil
A masculine noun.
Say the English meaning, cover the Arabic, and recall the word. The plain reading aids approximate the sounds; they do not replace the Arabic spelling.
02Name the animal in a sentence
Modern Standard Arabic
هَذَا حِصَانٌ كَبِيرٌ
hadha hisanun kabir
This is a large horse.
Hadha introduces a masculine singular noun. The adjective follows the animal name. A useful feminine comparison is هَذِهِ بَقَرَةٌ (hadhihi baqara), “This is a cow.” Learn the noun with its grammatical gender; do not decide only from the English word.
03Say where it is
Modern Standard Arabic
الْقِطَّةُ تَحْتَ الْكُرْسِيِّ
alqittatu tahta alkursi
The cat is under the chair.
The location turns a label into a useful message. Keep “the cat” together, then add the place. For more positions, see Arabic prepositions. Try changing the chair to another familiar object without changing the animal.
04Separate one fish from fish in general
samaka
An individual fish.
samak
Fish as a group or food.
Not every English singular–plural pair maps onto an Arabic word plus a regular ending. Maiz is a general goat term; more specific names can identify an individual animal or its sex. The chart gives everyday recognition words, not a complete zoological classification.
05Learn useful plurals as pairs
Some plurals change inside the word: كَلْب ← كِلَاب (kalb → kilab, dogs), قِطَّة ← قِطَط (qitta → qitat, cats), and طَائِر ← طُيُور (tair → tuyur, birds).
Modern Standard Arabic
هَذِهِ الْقِطَطُ صَغِيرَةٌ
hadhihi alqitatu saghira
These cats are small.
Ordinary MSA descriptions of nonhuman plurals use feminine singular agreement. Explore nonhuman plural agreement for the full pattern.
06Add one new word in context
Modern Standard Arabic
فِي الْمَزْرَعَةِ بَقَرَةٌ
fi almazraati baqara
There is a cow on the farm.
Here the place comes first, followed by the animal. Use the reference shelf to add rabbit, sheep, or donkey to your vocabulary. Recall a meaning before checking it, and keep a new word inside a short sentence rather than learning a long list in one sitting.
07Read the spelling and the meaning together
The word جَمَل is jamal, camel. The adjective جَمِيل is jamil, beautiful. Similar letters do not make them the same word. A long vowel or an extra letter can change the meaning.
Choose three animals and describe their size or location. Review noun gender when selecting hadha or hadhihi, and use the 25-name chart as a reference rather than a memorisation deadline.
What to remember
- Learn animal names with their grammatical gender.
- Samaka identifies one fish; samak is a collective word.
- Learn common plurals as pairs and use feminine singular agreement for ordinary nonhuman plural descriptions.
