Nour used to spend about an hour on social media after dinner. She bought an Arabic story, but had read only a few pages. On Monday, she decided to try a week without browsing those sites. She put the book beside her chair and wrote a small note: “Time to read.”
On the first evening, Nour picked up her phone as usual, then saw the note and remembered her plan. She put the phone in her bag and opened the book. She read the first chapter in twenty minutes, then wrote three new words in her notebook. She still had time to prepare food for the following day.
On Tuesday, her friend called and asked, “Why am I not seeing your posts this week?” Nour explained the experiment and said, “I am still using my phone for calls and messages. I just want to finish my story.” They went out together for a walk in the park that evening and caught up with each other’s news.
On the evening of the seventh day, Nour finished the story and put it on the shelf. She looked at her vocabulary notebook and said, “I want to keep reading.” She decided to read before opening social media and to set a timer for a quarter of an hour when using it. The next day, she chose another book from the library.
