THE SHORT ANSWER

Useful sports words in Arabic include كُرَة الْقَدَم (football), كُرَة السَّلَّة (basketball), سِبَاحَة (swimming), and جَرْي (running). A match is مُبَارَاة, a team is فَرِيق, and a result is نَتِيجَة. The 20-word chart combines activities with the words you need to discuss a game.

01Start with familiar games

Football / soccerكُرَة الْقَدَم

kurat alqadam

The ball game played with the feet.

Basketballكُرَة السَّلَّة

kurat assalla

The game with baskets.

Tennisكُرَة الْمِضْرَب

kurat almidrab

Also commonly called tinis.

Kura means ball. In these compound names, its ending is heard as t before the following word. Learn the whole name rather than translating each game as kura alone.

02Choose a useful activity verb

Modern Standard Arabic

أَلْعَبُ كُرَةَ الْقَدَمِ بَعْدَ الدَّرْسِ

alabu kurata alqadami bada addars

I play football after the lesson.

Alabu means I play. For an activity such as running, a useful model is أُمَارِسُ الْجَرْيَ (umarisu aljary), “I go running” or “I practise running.” Learn a natural verb with each activity instead of forcing play into every English expression.

03Name the event and the place

Modern Standard Arabic

الْمُبَارَاةُ فِي الْمَلْعَبِ

almubaratu fi almalab

The match is on the playing field.

Mubara names the contest; malab names the place. Depending on the sport and context, malab can refer to a field, court, or stadium. Neither word tells you by itself which sport is being played.

Male playerلَاعِب

laib

One man who plays.

Female playerلَاعِبَة

laiba

One woman who plays.

Teamفَرِيق

The group competing together.

The team is a unit; it is not the singular of player. Keep the person and the group distinct. Compare the gender forms with Arabic noun gender.

05Watching is different from playing

Modern Standard Arabic

أُشَاهِدُ الْمُبَارَاةَ مَعَ أَخِي

ushahidu almubarata maa akhi

I watch the match with my brother.

Ushahidu reports watching. It does not say that the speaker plays on a team. The shahada verb guide gives more forms. Use hobbies vocabulary when explaining what you enjoy in your free time.

06Ask about the result

Modern Standard Arabic

مَا النَّتِيجَةُ؟

ma annatija

What is the score or result?

During a game, natija can ask about the current score; afterwards, it can ask for the final result. تَعَادُل (taadul) means a draw or tie. The moment in the conversation supplies whether the result is final.

Modern Standard Arabic

انْتَهَتِ الْمُبَارَاةُ بِالتَّعَادُلِ

intahati almubaratu bittaadul

The match ended in a draw.

07Build a short sports update

A useful update names the sport, says whether you played or watched, and adds one detail about the match. Hadaf is a goal; fariq is a team; natija is a result. Those words do different jobs.

Choose only the vocabulary needed for your message. “I watch the match with my brother” is already a complete, useful sentence. Add further words from the reference chart when you can explain what each contributes.
