Sara was coordinating a neighbourhood workshop to repair tools and equipment. Before the event, the team approved a draft promising participants one follow-up session the following Saturday. The promise was not to repair everything, but to offer a chance to ask the trainers about what happened after the first attempt. Sara read this sentence to those attending when the workshop began on Saturday.

The day went well: some items came out usable, while others needed more time. When the press release arrived, Sara found that the participant count and the activity description were accurate. The text the editor had written ended by thanking the volunteers. The following Saturday’s session, however, was not mentioned; the workshop seemed a story completed at the end of the day. She read it twice: once as news, and once through the eyes of someone who had heard the promise in the room.

The editor said space was limited and the release summarized what had happened, rather than the team’s entire schedule. Sara found his explanation reasonable, but it left a question that was not an editorial one. Nur had asked her while trying her lamp again, “If it goes out, should I bring it next Saturday?” Nur was waiting for an appointment, rather than better wording.

Sara returned to the approved draft, then asked the two trainers whether they could attend. One agreed; the other asked for time to check. She did not tell Nur the session was ready, nor ask the editor to change the accurate numbers. In the team log she wrote, “Follow-up session: next Saturday; staff confirmation: being followed up,” and requested an answer before noon the next day.

She sent Nur a message explaining what had been confirmed and what remained unsettled, and promised to notify her when the answer came. The release stayed on the screen describing a successful day, while the lamp stayed on Nur’s table. The distance between the news and the lamp was not a lie; it was a specific appointment that needed someone’s work to become a scene deserving another release after it happened.
