Dalia — organiser: We have finished six weeks of neighbourhood skill-sharing meetings. In the draft report I wrote, “Ninety residents participated, and a lasting cooperation network formed.” I would like both of you to review it before I send it to the supporting organisation.

Wael — evaluator: The first thing I notice is that the record contains ninety visits by thirty people. Visits show the volume of activity, but they do not mean we reached ninety different people.

Nabil — participant: I attended four times, and my name was recorded each time. I feel the meetings helped me, but I do not want my visits to become four people in the report.

Dalia — organiser: You are both right; I will correct the number and list visits separately. Twelve participants answered a survey, and ten said they were satisfied with the meetings. Does that not strengthen the description of the project as successful?

Wael — evaluator: It strengthens a limited judgment about respondents’ satisfaction. We do not know the views of those who did not respond and cannot assume either satisfaction or dissatisfaction. Moreover, satisfaction is not the goal we announced.

Nabil — participant: I remember the goal: for a participant to meet someone from the neighbourhood whom they could ask for help after the meeting. For me that happened when I asked a new neighbour about preparing my CV.

Dalia — organiser: That is a strong example, and I would like to put it at the start of the report. You were hesitant at the first meeting, then began initiating conversations with others. It seems to me that the project built your confidence.

Wael — evaluator: It may have contributed, but we do not know everything that changed in Nabil’s life. Let us ask for his interpretation before making the project the sole cause of a complex personal change.

Nabil — participant: The meetings really did help me, and during the same period I started a new job requiring me to speak with people. I can describe what I gained here, but I cannot precisely separate the effect of each experience.

Dalia — organiser: I worry the report will look weak if we qualify every result. The supporter’s form asks, “Did the project succeed?” and leaves one field for a short answer, not a long discussion.

Wael — evaluator: A qualification does not cancel a result; it defines what the result can support. We can say the meetings created opportunities to meet new people and that we have early examples of subsequent cooperation, without yet claiming it will continue.

Nabil — participant: I also hope the problems do not disappear behind my story. My friend came once, then stopped because the time conflicted with his work. His absence did not mean he was uninterested in the idea or had gained nothing.

Dalia — organiser: We did not ask those who stopped why they did so. We distributed the survey at the end of the meeting, so those who stayed became the easiest for us to reach. I will mention this limitation in the feedback collection method.

Wael — evaluator: We can send an optional invitation to those who agreed to contact, asking what helped or hindered participation. If they do not respond, we will leave their views unknown instead of filling the gap with our assumptions.

Nabil — participant: But do not make follow-up a test of loyalty to the project. Someone may prefer not to explain why they withdrew, or may need time before asking for help from a person they met here.

Dalia — organiser: I had been thinking of counting messages exchanged between participants. I now see we might push them to send messages to please us and then treat the number as evidence of the relationships we wanted to build.

Wael — evaluator: An optional question about an experience of cooperation is enough, without requesting messages or other people’s names. Because the purpose is to understand the experience, not inspect relationships, we also accept answers from people for whom that has not happened.

Nabil — participant: If you use my story, send me the text to review. I agree to mentioning the cooperation on preparing my CV without my name, but not to describing me as previously isolated; that is not how I describe myself.

Dalia — organiser: I will respect that and will not make the story represent every participant. I still want the supporter to understand the value of what happened: small numbers do not mean the cooperation you described is insignificant.

Wael — evaluator: Certainly; a story serves a different function from a count. It explains how a benefit occurred, while the count shows the extent of what we observed. Neither replaces the other or needs exaggeration to matter.

Nabil — participant: So will the meetings continue? Some participants understood the evaluation as an announcement of another series. I know the room is returning to its previous use, and I do not want us to wait for a date that does not exist.

Dalia — organiser: I will clarify that the series ended as planned and that evaluation is not a promise to renew it. Repeating it requires a venue and budget, even if the report shows clear benefits for some participants.

Wael — evaluator: That separates two questions: what did we achieve, and can we continue? Lacking a room does not invalidate a benefit that occurred, just as an existing benefit does not automatically make resources for a new series available.

Nabil — participant: Some cooperation may continue outside the organised meetings. My neighbour and I agreed to help each other when needed, but that is an arrangement between us, not a new service the project can promise the neighbourhood.

Dalia — organiser: In the results field I will write that we observed new connections and initial cooperation, whose continuation is not yet clear. I will attach the counts, survey limitations, and Nabil’s story after he approves the final wording.

Wael — evaluator: We will request follow-up in two weeks from those who agreed to it and state its date in the report. We will not call the network lasting in advance: the open question is part of the evaluation’s result, not a gap that must be hidden.

Nabil — participant: That lets me recognise my experience in the report without an exaggerated description. I will review my story, and I hope a summary is sent to participants explaining what we learned and what remains unknown, rather than only another request for information.

What to remember

  • Distinguish repeat visits, distinct participants, satisfaction and evidence of cooperation.
  • Use participant accounts to explain benefits while respecting consent and limits on causal claims.
