Layla — returning resident: When I put my suitcase outside my old room, I found the sewing machine and your son’s desk. I know I have been away for eight years, but I acted as though the door would open onto my very same former life.

Faris — her brother: We had told you about the room on our calls, but seeing it is different. When I said the house was yours, I meant you were welcome; we had not clearly discussed how long you would stay or the arrangements.

Hind — longtime friend: And I cancelled our meeting yesterday because of work, so it seemed to you that I was no longer interested. Perhaps you arrived carrying the timetable of our former lives, while we are trying to welcome you within our current ones.

Layla — returning resident: That is true, but this time I have not come back for a short visit. I ended the lease on my apartment there and sent my books. I want to build a life here, and I am afraid of remaining a guest everyone expects to leave.

Faris — her brother: I am not waiting for you to leave the city; I want us to know how we will share the house. Our mother uses the room for sewing in the morning, and my son studies there in the evening. It is not an empty space waiting for its owner.

Hind — longtime friend: You may need a place of your own without that meaning you are a stranger to your family. I do not visit my family every day either, although I have lived in the same neighbourhood for years.

Layla — returning resident: I kept postponing the search for an apartment, as though renting one would be an admission that the return had failed. I can hear how odd that idea is now; I used to run an entire home by myself abroad.

Faris — her brother: Perhaps I contributed to the misunderstanding when I said we would arrange everything after you arrived. I am glad you are nearby, but I cannot promise you a permanent room without discussing it with our mother and my son.

Hind — longtime friend: Would you like me to go with you to view the apartment whose advert you sent? I can do that on Saturday. Going out spontaneously every evening is no longer possible for me with my current work schedule.

Layla — returning resident: I would like that, and I will ask the owner about a viewing time. But there is something I have not explained: my remote-work contract lasts six months, and I do not yet know what I will do when it ends.

Faris — her brother: I thought the word “returned” meant your career plan was complete. Does this mean you are trying out living here, and that leaving again is a possibility you are already considering?

Hind — longtime friend: Let us let her explain before we give her return a label. A sincere desire to stay can coexist with open questions; we do not know what will happen to our jobs either.

Layla — returning resident: I want to stay, and I will look for work here too. I am not hiding a plan to leave, but I cannot promise you that I will never change my position however the circumstances around me change.

Faris — her brother: I understand the difference now. What I need is to know your plan for the coming weeks, not a guarantee that you will stay forever. I confused asking for clarity with asking for certainty no one possesses.

Hind — longtime friend: And I want to hear about the years you were away, not act as though they were an interval that can be deleted. Do you still draw buildings in that little notebook you showed me?

Layla — returning resident: Yes, and this morning I drew the old bakery, then noticed it had become a library. I felt sad at first and did not go in, as though I had judged the place for not preserving my memories exactly as they were.

Faris — her brother: My son borrows a book from it every week. I am not saying the library erases your sadness about the bakery, but the place where you lost something has acquired a new meaning for him.

Hind — longtime friend: You do not have to like every change to belong to the city. I miss a garden that was closed and object to its closure, although I never left; objecting is not evidence that you are a stranger.

Layla — returning resident: Since arriving I have kept saying things were easier there. I know comparison can be useful, but sometimes I have used it to avoid learning a new way, as though my previous knowledge ought to be enough.

Faris — her brother: And once I replied, “Then why did you come back?” That was hurtful, and I apologise. You can miss things there and choose life here at the same time without contradiction.

Hind — longtime friend: And we can listen to your experience without treating it as a judgement on our lives. But we need questions in both directions; we have changed too, and we were not waiting inside an old photograph.

Layla — returning resident: Then I propose staying in the house for ten days, if everyone agrees to the arrangement. I will look for a place of my own, whether the advertised apartment suits me or I need to see another option.

Faris — her brother: This evening we will ask our mother and my son what suits them, and not decide on their behalf. I can help move the books next Friday, but I cannot leave my responsibilities on working days.

Hind — longtime friend: And I will confirm Saturday’s time after you contact the apartment owner. I cannot promise to be available constantly, but I can promise we will not leave our meetings hanging on “let us meet soon” without a real step.

Layla — returning resident: That reassures me more than a promise that nothing has changed. I will take my cup out of the suitcase today; I do not want to wait until the plan is complete to start living, even if its place here is temporary.

Faris — her brother: Put it on the cup shelf and show us your drawings after dinner. I do not have a preserved copy of our former life to hand back to you, but I have a present life I want you to be part of.

Hind — longtime friend: And I want to get to know my friend as she is now, not only as I remember her. Let us begin with the cup and the notebook; then tell us about the first building you drew there and why you chose it.
