Maryam — reporter: I have received messages saying that Oasis Bridge will close tomorrow for six weeks. Our readers cross it to get to work, and I worry we may be late in alerting them to a major change.
Nadir — editor: The public interest is clear, but the scale of the impact increases our need to verify the story. Before drafting a headline, what do we know directly, and what are we repeating from others?
Samir — fact-checker: The three messages share the same spelling error. When I asked their senders, they referred me to the same group: these are three copies, not three independent accounts confirming the report.
Maryam — reporter: One sender lives beside the bridge and said she saw barriers and equipment yesterday. Does that observation not give us something more than a message circulating among residents?
Nadir — editor: It gives us an account of equipment being present, not of the length of a scheduled closure. We must not turn what she saw into evidence for what she inferred, even if the inference seems reasonable.
Samir — fact-checker: The attached image bears the word “draft” and last month’s date. I found its original in the technical office’s archive; it was among options for the work and did not specify an approved date.
Maryam — reporter: So the image is authentic, but the context in which it has been presented is misleading. I was going to write that a document confirms the closure, and now I see that this wording goes beyond what the document says.
Nadir — editor: Let us separate the document’s authenticity from the validity of the use we make of it. Have you found a more recent schedule or spoken to someone responsible for tomorrow’s planned bridge work?
Samir — fact-checker: The engineer in charge sent me the inspection schedule and confirmed its contents by phone. The work affects one lane, starts at nine in the morning, and is expected to finish at noon if no problem emerges.
Maryam — reporter: That is a narrower story than the one circulating, but it matters to people crossing the bridge. Still, a rival page is now publishing a headline about a lengthy closure, and readers may see our silence as being slow.
Nadir — editor: We do not need silence; we need to publish the part we have verified. Because urgency changes the priority of the work, not the strength of the evidence, we will present the confirmed practical information first.
Samir — fact-checker: I also called the author of the first message. He said he added the duration in weeks from a conversation he overheard. He has not seen a decision and cannot identify who originally made that statement.
Maryam — reporter: What if we make the headline a question: will the bridge close for six weeks? In the text, we would explain that we have found no confirmation, while using people’s interest in the subject.
Nadir — editor: A question mark does not stop the headline from reinforcing the claim. Many people will see it without reading the clarification, and we want to help them understand the situation, not increase the uncertainty around it.
Samir — fact-checker: Nor does our lack of confirmation mean that no closure proposal exists. The engineer confirmed only the inspection schedule; we must not turn the limits of our knowledge into a sweeping denial.
Maryam — reporter: Then I will write about the affected lane and inspection time, attributing the schedule to the technical office. I will say the finish time is expected, so it does not sound like a promise of traffic returning at an exact moment.
Nadir — editor: Make the last update time clear. We will publish this notice now and defer the report about a lengthy closure: the quality of the piece depends on what it establishes, not on how big its headline is.
Samir — fact-checker: I will check the map as well: the affected lane leads toward the centre, not away from it. That detail appears in the schedule and may change the reader’s decision about their route.
Maryam — reporter: Should we mention that we are checking other messages? I worry that someone who saw the circulating report will think we have ignored their question about the days following tomorrow’s announced inspection.
Nadir — editor: We can say we are asking the office about any subsequent changes. This notice need not repeat the unsubstantiated duration or accuse anyone of concealing a decision.
Samir — fact-checker: I will keep a record of each item’s origin and when we received it. If the schedule changes, we will explain what changed instead of silently editing the text and leaving readers comparing different versions.
Maryam — reporter: If someone new contacts us saying they have seen the same draft, I will not count that as additional confirmation. I will ask what they know directly and how they are connected to the current decision.
Nadir — editor: We need an approved schedule and independent confirmation from an informed official before publishing a new closure duration. If the two sources differ, we ask about that difference instead of choosing the more sensational account.
Samir — fact-checker: I will send a specific question about the draft and whether any option in it has become a decision. A clear question is better than requesting a general comment that may not address the point of uncertainty.
Maryam — reporter: I will prepare the notice with a headline specifying the inspection of one lane tomorrow. I will keep the investigation open, because deferring the broader claim does not mean abandoning the question readers care about.
Nadir — editor: That is the editorial decision: useful information now and continued investigation of the unresolved part. We will not publish the alleged closure, nor claim that we have proved it cannot happen later.
Samir — fact-checker: I will compare the final copy with the schedule before publication, then review the new reply when it arrives. That preserves a clear distinction for the reader between what is confirmed, what is expected, and what remains unknown.
