Ziyad and Mazin prepare for a five-kilometre walk. Shorter walks over the next few weeks help them get ready, and a route map guides them on the day.

Ziyad read an advertisement about a walking day in a large park. The route is five kilometres long, and the event is in a month. He wanted to take part with his friend Mazin, but they were not used to this distance. Mazin said, “Let us try a shorter route before that day.”
In the first week, they walked two kilometres twice after work. In the following week, they tried a route three kilometres long. They talked about their day and sat down for a little while when they felt tired. After that, they completed four kilometres on a route near home and were pleased with this progress.
On the evening before the walking day, Ziyad read the organisers’ message. The activity starts on Saturday at eight in the morning. He sent Mazin a map of the route, and they agreed to meet at the entrance at half past seven. Each of them prepared his shoes and water bottle before going to sleep.
In the morning, they arrived at the agreed time, then began walking with the group. They followed the coloured arrows along the route. After three kilometres, they sat on a bench for a short rest. Mazin said, “Only two kilometres remain!” They continued walking and reached the end together. They took a photograph and sent it to their friends. Ziyad said, “We completed the distance we prepared for!”

- Track the shorter practice walks separately from the five-kilometre activity and the two kilometres remaining after their rest.
- Distinguish the meeting at half past seven from the start at eight, and notice how the map and arrows support their journey.
