My name is Hiba. I joined a cooking class at the centre near my home. I like food, but I know only a few recipes. In the first class, the teacher asked us to work in pairs. I sat with Maryam, and the teacher gave us a sheet for preparing potato and carrot soup. We read the names of the ingredients together before starting.
The teacher said, “Wash the potatoes and carrots first, then chop them.” There was one chopping board on our table. We washed the carrots together. I said to Maryam, “You start with the carrots, and I will wash the potatoes.” After that, we swapped jobs: I used the board, and Maryam put the pieces in a large bowl.
We looked at the sheet again and noticed that we had forgotten the onions. Maryam brought them from the other table, and we completed the missing step. Then the teacher helped us put the ingredients in the pot. She said, “Well done, both of you! Read each step before moving to the next one.”
While waiting for the soup, we washed the equipment and tidied the table. When it was ready, we tasted it and smiled. Maryam said, “It tastes delicious, and working together is fun.” I wrote my notes on the sheet so that I could try the recipe at home. Before leaving, we agreed to work together in the next class.
