01Read the Arabic story
اللَّهْجَةُ الْمَحَلِّيَّةُ الَّتِي اخْتِيرَتْ لِإِعْلَانٍ فَاخِرٍ
كُنْتُ رَاضِيًا عَنِ التَّسْجِيلِ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَفْهَمَ مَا يُوحِي بِهِ. طُلِبَ مِنِّي مَقْطَعٌ صَوْتِيٌّ لِإِعْلَانِ أَثَاثٍ فَاخِرٍ، بِلَهْجَةِ الْمَكَانِ، لِتَبْدُوَ الصُّورَةُ أَقْرَبَ إِلَى النَّاسِ. جَاءَ سَامِي، وَهُوَ مُمَثِّلٌ يُحِبُّ الْإِتْقَانَ، وَسَأَلَ عَنْ طُولِ الْمَقْطَعِ قَبْلَ أَجْرِهِ. أَعْطَيْتُهُ النَّصَّ، وَأَشَرْتُ إِلَى الْكُرْسِيِّ الْمَصْنُوعِ خِصِّيصًا لِلتَّصْوِيرِ. وَأَغْلَقْتُ بَابَ الْغُرْفَةِ.
أَضَافَ سَامِي تَحِيَّةً كَانَ يَسْمَعُهَا فِي بَيْتِ جَدَّتِهِ. كَتَبْتُ مَعْنَاهَا بِالْفُصْحَى فِي دَفْتَرِي: «أَهْلًا بِمَنْ يَشْتَرِي وَبِمَنْ لَا يَشْتَرِي». ضَحِكَ الْمُخْرِجُ وَقَالَ إِنَّ النِّصْفَ الثَّانِي يُضْعِفُ الْحَمَاسَ لِلشِّرَاءِ. قَصَصْتُهُ، فَاسْتَقَامَ الْإِيقَاعُ. وَعِنْدَ الْعَرْضِ الْأَوَّلِ، سَمَّى الْمُخْرِجُ النَّتِيجَةَ «تَزْكِيَةَ أَهْلِ الْمَكَانِ لِذَوْقِنَا»، وَحَرَّكَ الْقَلَمَ كَأَنَّهُ أَغْلَقَ مِلَفًّا.
لَمْ يَطْلُبْ سَامِي أَجْرًا آخَرَ، وَلَمْ يَقُلْ إِنَّ اللَّهْجَةَ حِكْرٌ عَلَيْهِ. طَلَبَ أَنْ يَسْمَعَ الْجُمْلَةَ كَامِلَةً. قَالَ: «صَوْتِي لَكُمْ فِي هَذَا الْعَمَلِ، وَلَكِنَّ الْمُوَافَقَةَ لِي وَحْدِي؛ لَمْ أَحْضُرْ نِيَابَةً عَنْ أَحَدٍ». سَأَلْتُهُ إِنْ كَانَ يَتَكَلَّمُ عَنْ بَيْتِ جَدَّتِهِ أَمْ عَنْ زَبَائِنِ الْمَتْجَرِ. أَجَابَ بِأَنَّهُ أَدَّى تَحِيَّةً، لَا اسْتِطْلَاعًا لِلْآرَاءِ.
أَعَدْتُ النِّصْفَ الْمَحْذُوفَ، فَاحْتَجْنَا إِلَى صُورَةٍ أَطْوَلَ لِلْكُرْسِيِّ. لَمْ تَتَغَيَّرِ الْأَسْعَارُ، وَبَقِيَ الْأَثَاثُ فَاخِرًا، لَكِنَّ التَّحِيَّةَ لَمْ تَعُدْ تُسَاوِي بَيْنَ التَّرْحِيبِ وَالشِّرَاءِ. أَرْسَلْتُ إِلَى سَامِي الْمَقْطَعَ وَالْعِبَارَةَ الْمُقْتَرَحَةَ تَحْتَهُ: «أَدَاءُ سَامِي لِإِعْلَانِ الْمَتْجَرِ». وَافَقَ عَلَيْهِمَا، وَطَلَبَ حَذْفَ وَصْفِ «صَوْتِنَا» مِنَ النُّسْخَةِ الْمَكْتُوبَةِ، لِأَنَّ ضَمِيرَ الْجَمْعِ يَتَّسِعُ أَكْثَرَ مِمَّا وَقَّعَ عَلَيْهِ.
سَأَلَنِي الْمُخْرِجُ هَلْ فَقَدَ الْإِعْلَانُ شَيْئًا مِنْ أَصَالَتِهِ. لَمْ أَسْتَطِعْ تَقْدِيرَ ذَلِكَ؛ فَأَنَا أَعْرِفُ مَا سَجَّلْنَاهُ، لَا مَا يَرَاهُ كُلُّ مَنْ يَتَكَلَّمُ بِهَذِهِ اللَّهْجَةِ. حَفِظْتُ النُّسْخَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ شَغَّلْتُ الْمُعْتَمَدَةَ. بَيْنَ التَّحِيَّةِ وَالْجُمْلَةِ التَّالِيَةِ بَقِيَ نَفَسٌ قَصِيرٌ كُنْتُ سَأَقُصُّهُ أَيْضًا. هَذِهِ الْمَرَّةَ، تَرَكْتُهُ حَتَّى يَنْتَهِيَ قَبْلَ أَنْ أُحَرِّكَ الصُّورَةَ.

I was pleased with the recording before I understood what it implied. I had been asked for an audio clip for a luxury furniture advert, in the local dialect, to make the image feel closer to people. Sami came in, an actor who cared about doing things well, and asked about the clip’s length before his fee. I gave him the script, pointed to the chair made specially for the shoot, and closed the room’s door.
Sami added a greeting he used to hear in his grandmother’s house. I wrote its meaning in Standard Arabic in my notebook: “Welcome to those who buy and those who do not.” The director laughed and said the second half weakened the urge to buy. I cut it, and the rhythm fell into place. At the first screening, the director called the result “the local people’s endorsement of our taste,” moving his pen as though closing a file.
Sami did not ask for another fee or say the dialect belonged exclusively to him. He asked to hear the complete sentence. “My voice is yours for this job,” he said, “but the approval is mine alone; I have not come on anyone’s behalf.” I asked whether he was talking about his grandmother’s house or the shop’s customers. He replied that he had performed a greeting, not an opinion poll.
I restored the deleted half, so we needed a longer shot of the chair. The prices did not change, and the furniture remained luxurious, but the greeting no longer equated being welcome with buying. I sent Sami the clip and the proposed caption beneath it: “Sami’s performance for the shop’s advert.” He approved both and asked us to delete “our voice” from the written version, because the plural pronoun reached further than what he had signed.
The director asked whether the advert had lost some authenticity. I could not judge that: I knew what we had recorded, not what everyone speaking this dialect thought. I saved both versions, then played the approved one. Between the greeting and the next sentence there was a short breath that I would have cut too. This time, I let it finish before moving the image.
