Maryam — adult sibling: I have put the keys to our mother’s house back in this box, not because I will stop visiting her, but because having them in my bag has come to mean that I am responsible for everything that comes up.

Adil — adult sibling: I did not realise things had reached this point. I visited on Friday, and we had a pleasant time. When I asked what she needed, she said things were organised, so I assumed the situation was comfortable.

Husam — adult sibling: Then let us divide visits equally. Each of us takes two days, and we rotate the remaining day. That makes the schedule clear, so no one feels their share is larger than the other two people’s.

Maryam — adult sibling: But our mother has not asked for a visitor every day. A visit does not show the calls I make, or the work of remembering and changing appointments. Everything looked organised on Friday because I had organised it before you arrived.

Adil — adult sibling: I would ask you to let me know if you needed anything, and consider that enough willingness to help. Now I understand that I was also leaving you the task of identifying needs and distributing them among us.

Husam — adult sibling: I tied fairness to the number of days because it is easier to count. But dropping in for tea is not equivalent to waiting three hours for the repair worker, even if both are called a visit.

Maryam — adult sibling: I do not want us to measure every cup by the minute. Sometimes I want to visit my mother just to talk with her, without leaving with a new list that I alone must follow up during the week.

Adil — adult sibling: Our mother sent me a message this morning and asked me to pass it on to you both. She wants someone to carry the bags on Tuesday and help arranging the window repair; she does not want surprise visits intended as inspections.

Husam — adult sibling: I was going to suggest ordering the shopping for her to spare her the market trip. But her request means she wants to choose for herself, and the difficulty she wants help with is carrying the bags.

Maryam — adult sibling: Exactly. When I did her shopping last time, she thanked me and then said I had cancelled her weekly meeting with her friend at the stall. I solved the carrying problem but took away something I had not noticed.

Adil — adult sibling: I live two hours away, so I will not promise to appear whenever something changes. But I can take responsibility for contacting the window repair worker and following up until the job is complete, after she agrees to the time and cost.

Husam — adult sibling: I can accompany her on Tuesday afternoon. In the morning I sleep after working nights; living nearby does not mean my time is always available, and I do not want to make a promise I will break.

Maryam — adult sibling: Her usual meeting with her friend is in the afternoon too, but confirm the time with her yourself. I do not want to become the go-between and then be asked why I did not remind you that the appointment had changed.

Adil — adult sibling: If the worker changes the appointment, I will arrange the alternative myself. I only need to know who wants to be present; our mother may choose to receive him herself, and we should not decide for her.

Husam — adult sibling: What if my shift changes before Tuesday? I would have written in the group that I could not make it and then treated the task as finished. I think that was sending it straight back to you, Maryam.

Maryam — adult sibling: Yes, and your silence would turn into presumed agreement from me. If one of us cannot attend, let that person request a replacement and confirm their acceptance, or discuss changing the time with our mother; an announcement alone is not enough.

Adil — adult sibling: I can contribute a larger share of the repair cost, but I do not want money to replace every contribution of my time. I will follow up with the worker myself, rather than only sending you the amount.

Husam — adult sibling: Nor should paying more give someone a stronger voice in choosing how the window looks. It is her house, and she will look through it every morning; our help does not make us the decision-makers on her behalf.

Maryam — adult sibling: I also want us to stop asking her for a report after every outing. Yesterday she asked why her walk to the library had become news that three people were waiting for, and I felt our anxiety was crowding her.

Adil — adult sibling: I called to reassure myself, but the same question repeated by all of us may feel like monitoring. I will ask what way of keeping in touch suits her, and also call to tell her about my day, not only to question her.

Husam — adult sibling: Then we should not draw up a complete plan and ask her to approve it afterward. We will offer what we can do and let her accept, amend, or decline without treating a refusal as ingratitude.

Maryam — adult sibling: Provided we do not make her manage our disagreement too. We should agree among ourselves on the limits of our commitments and ask about her own preferences. We should not tell her to choose which of us sacrifices more than the others.

Adil — adult sibling: I will write down my offer to help with the window repair, with my number for follow-up. Once she has agreed with the worker, I will explain that he should coordinate the appointment with me, so he does not call Maryam merely because he already has her number.

Husam — adult sibling: I will call her now to confirm Tuesday. I will not promise every week before seeing my new work schedule, and I will tell her early which times I can manage instead of apologising at the market door.

Maryam — adult sibling: As for me, I will visit on Thursday evening to sort the trip photographs as I promised her. If a new request comes up, I will pass it on so we can agree who takes responsibility, rather than automatically counting it as part of my visit.

Adil — adult sibling: I understand that easing your burden cannot be measured by these words alone. The difference will show when an appointment changes and the person responsible finds a solution without waiting for you to pick up the thread again.

Husam — adult sibling: Let us leave the keys in their box until we ask our mother where she would prefer them kept. And I will remove the daily-visit timetable I drew; I began by dividing up her days before understanding what she was asking of us.

What to remember

  • Recognise the planning and follow-up hidden behind apparently smooth family arrangements.
  • Take responsibility for confirming appointments and replacements instead of assuming another sibling will absorb changes.
  • Offer practical support without taking over a relative’s activities, choices, or privacy.
