Seasons in Arabic: The Four Names and Useful Sentences

Name the four seasons and describe when an activity happens without assuming one climate everywhere.

THE SHORT ANSWER

The four seasons in Arabic are الرَّبِيع (arrabi, spring), الصَّيْف (assayf, summer), الْخَرِيف (alkharif, autumn or fall), and الشِّتَاء (ashshita, winter). A season is فَصْل; seasons are فُصُول. Use fi before a season to say “in spring,” “in winter,” and so on.

01Read the four season names

Springالرَّبِيع

arrabi

Spring.

Summerالصَّيْف

assayf

Summer.

Autumn / fallالْخَرِيف

alkharif

Autumn / fall.

Winterالشِّتَاء

ashshita

Winter.

These are the usual Modern Standard Arabic names in their definite form. Autumn and fall are two English names for the same season, alkharif. The Arabic chart therefore has four entries, not five.

02Understand fasl and fusul

A useful noun phrase

فُصُولُ السَّنَةِ

fusulu assana

The seasons of the year.

Fasl means season in this topic, and fusul is its plural. In other contexts fasl can mean a chapter or a classroom. The surrounding words explain which sense is intended. Here assana means the year.

03Say in summer

Modern Standard Arabic

أَسْبَحُ فِي الصَّيْفِ

asbahu fi assayf

I swim in summer.

The preposition fi introduces when the activity happens. Replace summer with winter to make فِي الشِّتَاءِ (fi ashshita), “in winter.” The written article al stays present even when its l sound blends with the next letter.

04Notice the article in pronunciation

In arrabi, assayf and ashshita, the first root consonant is a sun letter. The written al is heard with that consonant doubled. In alkharif, kh is a moon letter and the l is heard.

This is a reading pattern, not three different spellings of the article. Review sun and moon letters and compare the first sound in each season word.

05Use seasons in a personal routine

Modern Standard Arabic

أَقْرَأُ كَثِيرًا فِي الشِّتَاءِ

aqrau kathiran fi ashshita

I read a lot in winter.

This sentence describes one person’s routine. It does not claim that everyone reads in winter or that winter always brings snow. Use an activity you actually do so the sentence has a clear, memorable purpose.

06Keep season names separate from weather

Modern Standard Arabic

الْجَوُّ مُعْتَدِلٌ فِي الرَّبِيعِ هُنَا

aljawwu mutadilun fi arrabii huna

The weather is mild here in spring.

Huna means here, which limits the observation to a place. Weather and seasonal patterns vary by region and hemisphere. The word spring does not itself mean warm. Our weather lesson teaches conditions such as sunny and rainy.

07A season is not a month

January is a month; winter is a season. Do not translate one as the other or attach a universal set of dates to the four season names. The month-name guide explains names and regional variants.

Modern Standard Arabic

أُحِبُّ الْخَرِيفَ

uhibbu alkharif

I like autumn.

Choose a season, add an activity or preference, and then name your location if the weather matters.

What to remember

  • Arrabi, assayf, alkharif and ashshita are spring, summer, autumn and winter.
  • Fi plus a season means in that season.
