THE SHORT ANSWER

Ikhlas, إِخْلَاصٌ, means sincerity or wholehearted dedication. In Islamic worship, it commonly describes devotion directed sincerely to Allah. It belongs to the root خ ل ص, associated with purity and freedom from mixture. The same word names Surah Al-Ikhlas, chapter 112 of the Quran.

01Ikhlas concerns sincerity of purpose

In a religious explanation, ikhlas often concerns the purpose behind an action: directing devotion to Allah sincerely rather than seeking people’s admiration. “Sincerity” is a useful short translation; “sincere devotion” makes the worship context clearer. The word does not itself mean that an activity is large, impressive or visible to others.

Outside an explicitly devotional sentence, the noun can describe sincerity or dedication in someone’s work or relationship. An original example is يَعْمَلُ بِإِخْلَاصٍ, ya'malu bi-ikhlaas at a pause: “He works with dedication.” The surrounding words tell you whether religious devotion, loyal commitment or sincere effort is the intended emphasis.

02Read the spelling as ikh-laas

The spelling is إِخْلَاصٌ. Its initial alif carries hamza with a kasrah, so the word begins with a short i. The kh represents kha, a friction consonant rather than an ordinary English k. The l is followed by a long aa, and the final s represents the emphatic consonant sad.

A helpful plain-letter pause reading is ikh-laas. In a fully read nominative noun form, the ending can be ikhlaasun; grammatical context can change that final ending. The doubled aa is a length cue, not an instruction to add a new syllable. Keep the kh sound together and avoid inserting an extra vowel between kh and l.

03The root connects purity with dedication

Ikhlas is the verbal noun of the form IV verb أَخْلَصَ, akhlasa. In appropriate contexts, that verb conveys making something pure, dedicating something sincerely or acting sincerely. The root’s meanings develop through different patterns and contexts; they do not all collapse into a single English word.

خَالِصٌ, khaalis, can describe something pure or unmixed. مُخْلِصٌ, mukhlis, describes someone being sincere or devoting themselves sincerely. Compare the forms before memorising them. Our Arabic roots guide introduces this root-and-pattern approach, which makes related nouns and descriptions easier to recognise in unfamiliar sentences.

04Recognise related forms in the Quran

Quran 98:5 uses مُخْلِصِينَ, mukhlisiin at a pause, in its description of sincere worship. It is a plural grammatical form of mukhlis, not the noun ikhlas copied unchanged. Quran 39:3 uses a form of khaalis in connection with devotion belonging to Allah. These examples show how one word family appears through different forms.

Also distinguish مُخْلِصٌ, mukhlis, from مُخْلَصٌ, mukhlas. The kasrah in the first gives an active description; the fathah in the second gives a passive description, such as one made pure or chosen in an appropriate context. The vowel changes the grammatical role, even when unvowelled spelling looks identical.

05Al-Ikhlas is a title of Surah 112

Surah Al-Ikhlas is the familiar title of Quran chapter 112. Its four verses affirm Allah’s oneness and uniqueness. The noun ikhlas does not appear in the verses themselves. This is a useful reminder that a chapter’s conventional title can identify its theme without being a word quoted from its text.

When someone says “read Al-Ikhlas,” they normally mean the surah; when they discuss “ikhlas in worship,” they mean the quality of sincere devotion. The definite article al helps form the title but does not erase the underlying meaning. See our 114 surah names reference for more examples of chapter titles and their meanings.

06Compare sincerity with intention

Niyyah, نِيَّةٌ, means intention. Ikhlas describes sincerity or purity of devotion. The two concepts are closely related, but they answer different vocabulary questions: what someone intends and how sincerely their purpose is directed. Learning one word should not make you replace the other in every sentence.

For practice, label ikhlas as a quality, mukhlis as a description of a person, and Al-Ikhlas as a chapter title when used in a Quran reference. Then identify which form appears in an example before translating. Our niyyah guide develops the intention vocabulary, while the charts below keep the similar spellings and their roles together.
